Loved this movie as a kid.
Somehow we lost the thread of movies like 2001/2010, Silent Running, the Eastern European sci-fi epics. There seemed to be a trend of intelligent sci-fi that became eclipsed by space operas and action\horror sci-fi in the 80's.

I think by the 80's everyone realized that we weren't going to have a future of transcendent alien contact into cosmic consciousness, we were going to have Reaganomics.

For a couple of months after this aired, a friend and I had shootouts with folded umbrellas.

Oddly enough, I also think sci-fi writers started hating the future.

When they were largely engineers, scientists, etc. (Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, etc.) they embraced the idea of future tech and could show off all the stuff they knew like orbital mechanics and what-not. High tech meant talking computers, FTL drives, miracle medicines, zap guns, and so forth.

Now, even modern tech can be daunting to get "right." In theory, someone 20 minutes into the future will be tracked 24/7, so it makes setting a crime story in the future difficult as you have to spend half the novel explaining away why even the stuff we have right now wouldn't have caught the person. We've grown up watching our gizmos evolve from being business machines to being entertainment devices, which few predicted. I mean, if you read the novelization of 2001, the crew play mathematics games with HAL, as opposed to even a simple game of Pong.

We may get to that shining future of starships and so forth, but I think it's gotten very difficult to make it believable in this more sophisticated, "realistic," and technology-saturated age.

I suppose I was speaking mostly from a style and form standpoint. Movies like Upstream Colors are very promising to me.

I was so young that I was traumatized by the scene where some guy gets shot with a wicked martian laser pistol, I must have just learned about dying or something, and it was really sad.

Wow, I haven't seen hide nor hair of this series since I was in single digits!

I'm aware of his work.
