I was in grade 9 when "Banned in the USA" was released, and, when we got an assignment in English class to write about a current issue, I'd say a good third of the essays were based on this song even though we were in Canada and the specific federal-versus-state constitutional issues addressed in this song didn't directly affect us in any way.
