We are doomed. Probably.

Well, time to watch cartoons!

Of course this actually preoccupies my thoughts constantly and I would love nothing more than to return the Earth to 1 or 2 billion people period.

The population increase also brings out the worst in the denialism crowd that says there is nothing to worry about. Because there will always be enough to take care of everyone. haha. Oh.

It's a little doomsday-esque, but that's just the situation. It's bad.

I'm proud to say that I got a vasectomy at 22 without having children. Personal choice - and it was a scary one to be sure because of societal pressure, parental pressure to have grandchildren... but at the end of my decision making process I saw one truth: children take resources. Money, time, food, attention.

It may seem selfish of me to say "I don't want to bring another person into my life that I have to spend money/time/food/attention on" - but that's the truth. I don't need a child and my wife and I decided that we were just as happy remaining just the two of us. My story is in many ways a microcosm of the larger problem. Not enough resources and enough education and fulfillment in my life not to have a need or desire to reproduce. Many years later now I'm still happy with that decision.

Nope, that's reasonable. What would be selfish would be to have a kid or two so you didn't have to deal with the social stigma but then neglect them or worse because you didn't actually want them.

If avian flu pandemic ran in the 2016 elections it would have my vote.

Until the minable phosphorous runs out, maybe 11 billion on a grain-heavy near vegan diet, 3 billion on the current American diet. Once we're into phosphorous recycling, 2-3 billion tops. Deduct 1 billion for desertification of grain belts as Hadley cells expand polewards and aquifers run dry. So, around 2 billion.

I root for Dr. Peters in "Twelve Monkeys".

A shitload of poor people will die, but humanity will continue along just fine.

Same shit, different century.

bac - 2013-11-03

yep. Millions are going to starve and we'll still have golden corrals.

Oh.
