bongoprophet - 2013-11-02

how did Lovecraft get so damned played out? I thought I was the only one who had the patience to read him. Do gamers even read?

Kind of tough to capture existential horror when you are tapping buttons to make your virtual dolly do something.

I'd rather play this than another game centering on zombies.

Lovecraft is very hard to read, and is often more notable for its racism than any actual horror for most modern audiences. I'm not sure if I'd say we've become more sophisticated in what scares us, but I'd say it's harder to scare someone with five-dollar words they rarely encounter in day-to-day life.

His core concept is still solid, and I prefer it for a lot of horror games/stories: Something so big and powerful is out there it could sweep us aside like dust, and (pick one): those lunatics over there are trying to get its attention, it's hiding just beyond our senses, they're waking up, we used to be them, etc.

I think TVTropes calls it "cosmic horror." It's often easier to suspend disbelief with that kind of thing than, say, vampires or wolfmen.

I started reading Lovecraft at 14 after playing the original Alone in the Dark videogame. As a teenager, I loved it.

I think the whole idea of these incomprehensible alien horrors is still solid, although I now find his stories in and of themselves basically unreadable.

This game looks boring.

Most "Lovecraft fans" really only know about C'thulu and that's pretty much it. Many of them, specifically those that feel 'squee' is an actual word, wouldn't be Lovecraft fans if they ever actually tried to read any Lovecraft.

This game doesn't look great, but Dredmore is one of the most fun rougelikes I've ever played, so I'd be willing to at least take a second look or learn how it's played before completely disregarding.

And like baleen said, anything is better than more zombie bullshit at this point.

I want a game in the art style of the opening to Charge of the Light Brigade.
