Hey Boomer, did the ACLU ever get back in touch with you? I left them a couple messages, but I'm not sure if they took them seriously.

Boomer The Dog - 2013-11-13

Thanks Homer,

I saw this in the hamper too and didn't think it would seriously make it up, this must be the the weirdest, video, no, audio that I've seen posted here. This comes from Here's Boomer's bark that I recorded on cassette from TV, and learned after listening many times.

If we ever meet I'll bark for you live.

I haven't heard from ACLU, and I was going to go downtown and check with them myself, but the media and other things are keeping me busy. I was hoping that the local chapter might have heard of my story already.

Boomer

I did not expect this to make it out of the hopper. Here is the news story I found it on. I was reading the news online and there you were! I looked for any media I could find as an excuse to mention it here.

Their number is 412-681-7736, in case you don't have it. Like I said before, I don't know if they can help you, but it's worth a shot! They don't charge you anything (which is REALLY nice!) and your growing celebrity can't hurt (lawyers love clients who can get them media exposure) I doubt any of the ACLU people have represented a dog before, but they do defend a lot of trans-individuals, and you're just as much a dog as any of my transsexual friends are women. You really do deserve that name change, and if anyone can find a legal loophole for you, it'd be them!

Also, what's up with the media? It's cool that you're getting more attention, but if it were me, I'd be getting kinda frustrated. The stories I've been reading lately are neat, but they seem more like gawking than anything else; like "here's a guy who thinks he's a dog! Isn't that strange?" and then that's it. There doesn't seem to be much *advocacy* on their part, which is a shame. You should bark at them and let them know that they need to focus more on the Boomer-support, and less on the jerks like ABC's forensic neuropsychologist Julia Ramos-Grenier.

(you're totally not alone and she doesn't know what the hell she's talking about)

Oh, and fuck the ABC comment community, too. "the sort of people who follow ABC News" ... !

Boomer The Dog - 2013-11-14

Thanks for the number, I'm more for being a walk-in, actually meeting people and doing business, rather than by phone, if I can, I find people more responsive that way.

People have related being a Dog to trans issues before, and when I read transgender type stories, some of the feelings do match up. Trans stories often seem to be more melancholy than mine though, and I like the concept of the anthro mixing, not just willing to switch sides and disappear as a pooch.

The court could do the name change, but Pennsylvania has a long-standing history of not letting unusual names go through, at least in the last 75 years or so back, as we saw in the court report books.

I don't think that the court here wants to be the first to let one through and set a precedent, so I'm trying to get it for a special reason, something that would apply to my case that wouldn't to an average person or Furry.

That might be for a performance reason, business name or something like that. In fact, a different court in PA asked an appellant if she was a performer or known in the public eye by her desired name. She wasn't, lost her case, but it does point to the court being willing to look at a case if it's more than just 'I want the name'.

I might like to go in and fight for something like species dysphoria, or 'Furry Rights' as part of a group identity to help others, and that's where the ACLU might be helpful, because I don't think that the court is just going to accept my crazy reasons if they only apply to myself.

I'd like to kick up more solid reasons, meaningful to me and to the court, though I mostly go it alone with my stuff. Not all Furries even support the idea of changing to your animal name legally.

I'm not frustrated with the coverage, kind of hoping that the stories themselves will be the advocacy, just by being out there. I've gotten some touching letters and replies from people who could see through the fluff in these articles and understand what the story means, even some who have sent their Dog's picture, and their Dog is also named Boomer, as well wishes.

I don't know if the coverage was any better, but it's changed to be more personal now. When the original story broke in 2010 it was about name change, Dog suit, Furries and Anthrocon, because this is the city the convention is held in.

Since the story was on Taboo, and with the blogs and other postings with more details, the media has been digging deeper, and I see a more sympathetic touch in the ABC article compared to some before.

I think some of the parts about me being alone come from the current situation itself. When the media talks to me, they always ask if there's a relative or friend that they can interview or have on camera, to get their opinion on being a Dog, how they deal with it and how it affects our relationship.

It's more perspective on the story, but most of the people they want don't want to be involved. Even though I have friends and support, it seems like it's more of a singular pursuit that I have when it comes down to it.

It would have been good if Julia the Neuropsychologist had called or written, I would have barked to her for the article. She might have gotten an outline of the story, I think that's what they do most times when they consult with their doctors.

I think it's just where the story is at in the media, and it has to develop with them, if it will.

Maybe you should call up PETA and see if they'll help you.

Boomer The Dog - 2013-11-14

Peta is an organization that I don't understand really, I don't know how they'd take it, but I think it would be an interesting pairing.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-14

That's a pretty good bark. What dog breed is boomer?

Boomer The Dog - 2013-11-14

I'm a Pyrenean Shepherd, close to Here's Boomer from TV, a medium size brown, black, gray shaggy Sheepdog. He was 27 pounds, I'm much larger in costume, so it might be odd to some that a bark like that comes out of a big Sheepdog!

I learned from the best, the original Boomer.. :)

Memedumpster, yes, ABC interviewed me for that for what might have been an hour and wrote the story. It was different and unique to put the bark on here, thanks.

Boom

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-14

To be perfectly honest, I thought that bark was from a mid to small sized dog, so you've totally got it.

BorrowedSolution - 2013-11-14

I'm rating this out of context.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-11-16

Keep fighting for your rights Boomer. I think it's ridiculous that the judge wouldn't grant you the name. Also, I'm sure you've heard every mean thing there is to say about you, but I hope the attention doesn't bring harassment.

Boomer The Dog - 2013-11-20

It seems that if I got the name, the consequences of it would be all on me. I think it's mostly PA's stance on unusual names in general, that they haven't granted them in the past.

If it does bring harassment, that seems to be part of the job.. :) Meanies are just going with the crowd and don't know what they're talking about, going off over some unspecified evil.

Some of it I think is the fear of an oncoming Furry army, people changing themselves into animals. Some people are afraid of genetic mutations and the world being different than it is now.

Either that or it's what I'm being trolled to believe, by posts and messages I get from people. Some hear the bark and think I'm turning myself into a Dog and they seem sincere, and others hear my bark in costume and have thought it's electronic.

Let them believe..

Boomer
