I'm glad this was successfully passed and I'm looking forward to see how it goes.

One of them keeps clicking his teeth.

baleen - 2013-11-10

Another one had an interesting way of pronouncing "indicted."
Kind of embarrassing.
This show really bugs me, but that lady could buy me dinner.

baleen - 2013-11-10

Also it's Switzerland where this legislation was passed, not Sweden. Sweden and Norway already have generous wage laws, making it a bad place for tourists (too expensive) and a great place for workers and small businesses.

Hooker - 2013-11-10

Switzerland just passed a law giving a basic monthly income to their citizens. We four have no economic, sociology, political, or even European background. We also don't know anything more about the situation and are of average intelligence (perhaps less in Cenk's case). Let's discuss it for ten minutes on YouTube.

Ryo-Cokey - 2013-11-10

No, it hasn't passed such a thing yet. They just agreed to go to a vote. Even if it succeeds then, it'll be some time before it goes into effect:

Hooker - 2013-11-10

Not really the point I was making, tho.

baleen - 2013-11-10

Ryo! You always appear at the strangest times.

wackyakmed - 2013-11-10

I love the basic income idea because it forces entitled asshats to verbalize their prejudices. "Do you think people should be paid for doing NOTHING?!"

No, I think people should be given access to status and resources for doing all the socially productive acts that they aren't currently compensated for performing. I want them paid for producing children, for spending time with children, for taking care of of the sick in their neighborhood and the elderly.

I want artists, and philosophers, and indie video game makers to not live on the edge of destitution just because a banker can't figure out a way to exploit their labor. I want women and minorities to be to finally be compensated for the socially productive acts they perform at the same level as old white dudes.

If those resources and status are taken away from a fucking hedge fund manager in the process, all the better. Only a broken society would have awarded them to him to begin with.

chairsforcheap - 2013-11-10

well said.

memedumpster - 2013-11-10

Stars.

baleen - 2013-11-10

Yeah I'll go for that.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-11-10

Stars for you.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2013-11-10

How about we pay people to not have children?

Nikon - 2013-11-10

wackyakmed earned these.

Rafiki - 2013-11-10

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-11-10

Stars, and an additional point: Oh, if ONLY bankers just exploited labor these days. Instead, they fuck around with numbers on spreadsheets, come up with new ways to make the numbers for them to go up at the expense of everyone else, then buy off regulators to recover the money they filched and then lost at taxpayer expense.

It's like foreclosing on widows and orphans has become respectable in retrospect.

The God of Biscuits - 2013-11-10

Winner

pyslexic dharmacist - 2013-11-10

*slow clap*

Except I agree with Scrotum re: children.

This is why I keep reading POE comments. They remind me that there are thoughtful adults on the internet, among all the shut-ins, adolecent trolls, frustrated conservatives and self-diagnosed-autistics.

I love you. Don't ever change.

exy - 2013-11-11

Who am I to withhold my commie, commie stars? Bonus star for giving me cause to submit a rating before they finished talking.

chumbucket - 2013-11-11

This is chiseled in stone somewhere, right?

badideasinaction - 2013-11-11

Stars.

Also, this was done as an experiment in Canada in the 1970s. Spoiler: it didn't bring about the collapse of society and instead meant people could take care of their kids and go to school instead of dropping out to support the family.

Riskbreaker - 2013-11-11

YOU NAZICOMMIES! NO WONDER WE ARE ON THE END OF TIMES!

Just kidding, stars.

takewithfood - 2013-11-12

The funny thing about the conversation in Canada about Mincome or the GAI is that it's been championed almost exclusively by Hugh Segal, a Conservative.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-11-12

sensibleakmed

moldprince - 2013-11-11

I'll throw my five pointies behind that.

moldprince - 2013-11-11

dammit that was meant as a wackyakmed reply, obviously.

stifford - 2013-11-11

I like TYT...it's not much better than other news, but at least they curse when they do it. Plus I would like to do wonderfully perverse things to Ana.
