"...censor and disallow truthful claims about nutritional and dietary supplements."

Which means, "they won't let us sell our stuff without that pesky 'science' stuff and peer-reviewed studies."

And "perfectly safe" doesn't mean "does anything remotely resembling what we say it does."

As bad as pharmacos are, the asshat claiming that his "ginseng and st. John's wort pills will prevent cancer because it's natural so shut up and no I won't let someone even test to see if it has the stuff in it I say it does" is far worse.

"The FDA has probably killed more people in this country than all the wars we've been in combined."

Never change, internet whack-jobs. Never change.

memedumpster - 2013-11-16

"Congratulations on being chosen, this is a very lucrative new department for career advancement."

"I know, thank you! Imagine me, a government regulator!"

"A regulator regulator at that. Your first assignment will be to prevent the FDA from doing its job all year."

"Isn't that dangerous for public safety?"

"...."

"Are you okay?"

"Sorry, I came on myself when you asked that."

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-11-16

It's odd. They see regulators as both powerless to regulate yet all-powerful to regulate.

Also, who thought it was a good idea to make the FDA's logo in the Battlestar Galactica font?

memedumpster - 2013-11-16

I think I can explain.

Lock a cat in a room with only one window, covered in a well washed, thick pane of glass. Make loud noises until the cat freaks out. The cat will bash itself to death against the glass trying to escape, both thinking the glass isn't there one moment and running into its hard reality the next, then immediately forgetting about it and resetting to its first notion once the sound comes back.

This kind of nonsentient perceptual loop of one error of incomplete understanding after the other is the conservative mindset.

BorrowedSolution - 2013-11-16

SPK; Yeah, it's along the same lines of conspiracy theorists on the one hand claiming governments are evil masterminds of destruction, and yet totally inept at the same time.

I think the truth of it is that they lack the intellectual honesty to just say "I DON'T LIKE THIS FOR LARGELY EMOTIONAL AND RHETORICAL REASONS AND I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THINGS LIKE 'LOGIC' AND 'FACTS'!!!" Instead they ape rationality and spout bullshit opinion as fact and hope that nobody notices.

BorrowedSolution - 2013-11-16

Oh, and as and aside to the two of you; there's a big hopper battle going on over the 'Fluttershy Takes Flight' video. It's currently +0 (9/9). Y'all should hop in there and cast your ballots.

I'm more of a tip the scales kind of guy. Downvoting something (which I would on that sucker) indicates that I am unwilling to engage in the poeVelry of word and star wars that happens on the front page for the topic at hand. That I just don't want to see it. Since poeTV is basically run by videos regarding science, Russia, politics, and schizophrenia, I leave bronies in that pillar of changing trends that come and go, so I don't feel I should get all hopper vigilant about it. I don't want to oppress bronies, just make fun of them, which requires the front page.

ashtar. - 2013-11-16

I pretty much vote up anything hopper-controversial, in the hopes of delicious slapfights in the comments.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-16

I'm actually glad you guys are downvoting Fluttershy Takes Flight. It is a very cruel and upsetting video; I would have downvoted it too, but I'm contractually obligated to upvote any and all Fluttershy content, even snuff movies. :(

ashtar. - 2013-11-16

Why the FDA needs to regulate shit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_medicine

Why there's been resurgence of unregulated bullshit quackness:
As long as you call it a a 'dietary supplement' and put "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease" on it, you can claim it does anything you want.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietary_Supplement_Health_And_Edu cation_Act_of_1994

memedumpster - 2013-11-16

I get infuriated every time I get a cold, because I go to Walgreens and right next to my precious Q-Bomb is a bunch of products with tiny ass print saying "homoepathic medicine not evaluated by the FDA." It is right next to the real medicine, packaged the same, with the same label aesthetics.

Fuck you, Walgreens.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-16

I'm fine with there being a market for unregulated bullshit quackness, just so long as the warning labels are plastered all over the stuff in stark, bold, impossible-to-miss type. Say, at least half of all visible packaging surface needs to have warnings and a big, scary, skeletal duck on it

Treat homeopathic snake oil like cigarettes, and everyone wins.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-11-16

What's worse about Walgreens is that they're stocking that shit in the child medicine area, because, and I say this due to the fact that many new parents are clueless:

THERE ARE NO EFFECTIVE COLD MEDS FOR YOUR 0-2 YEAR OLD WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION!

So parents desperate for little Billy to sleep get a quack-vial full of colored sugar-water and think they're doing something other than giving money to frauds.

We are heralds of the downfall of our once great nation, my friends.

So if the patient stops, it was because they chose to?
