This is something I've been meaning to address for a while. One of the components of Gleipnir was "the sinews of a bear", but occasionally I've seen it described as "the sensibility of a bear". What I think is going on is, Norse people believed that sinews were what registered pain, in the same way that we associate the heart with love.
In German, the noun "Sehne" means "sinew", while the verb "sehnen" means "to long for". Coincidental similarity between unrelated words, or is it more of the the sinew / pain connection?
