So Miley is the Toki of the pop singer world?

I think I'll take Miley's self-awareness over Lady Gaga's "I'm an ARTIST now!" mentality.

candyheadrobot - 2013-11-26

I'm inclined to agree, but I still think Gaga is okay. Still, I think I heard it said best recently, pop music is pretty much sexy karaoke today. Looks like Miley has upped her game though, it seems she's even been working on her glutes, which abc apparantly didn't want to show.

On another note: is it just me, or has the site gotten cleaner or something?

EvilHomer - 2013-11-26

I think pop music has always been sexy karaoke. And damn, Miley's got legs like Teela now! Totally would.

Scrimmjob - 2013-11-26

http://nesguide.com/games/toki/

There is a resemblance.

OxygenThief - 2013-11-26

Gaga or Miley? Is not listening to terrible music created by machines and lipsynced by a collection of secondary sexual characteristics off the table now?

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-11-26

Were I King of the world, OT, I'd pass a law requiring your description to be on the business card of every music business executive today. So when someone asks, "what is your industry about?" they can just show the card and it will explain everything.

La Loco - 2013-11-26

Can I has pop starz?

Hooker - 2013-11-26

Lady Gaga writes her own music and her music sounds far, far better. So fuck this Miley Cyrus is the better pop star shit.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-11-27

I didn't really have a strong opinion on Gaga until I heard her interviews with Howard Stern which really are very interesting. I think she's fascinating. I used to think she was an attention whore until I heard her talk about her creative process. Now I tend to think of her as much less pretentious than I originally assumed.

Miley has become America's biggest pop troll. And thus I love her.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-27

Gaga's a much better musician than people give her credit for. With most modern pop music, yeah, the singers tend to be hacks, pretty faces hired by megacorporations to sing other people's songs. Pop singers are, by and large, defined by their looks and attitudes, not by their knowledge of music or creative aptitude. This is the standard critique people fall back on when discussing pop singers, and in most cases, it's appropriate.

But Gaga came at her career from the other side of the wall. She's an art school grad who worked as a high-profile professional songwriter for said megacorporations before getting her break. She composes her own music, she manages her own look... you can say what you want about the aesthetic merits of Gaga's work (it's not everyone's cup of tea), but she DOES know her shit. She's in a totally separate class from all the Biebers and Madonnas out there.

Hell, Gags is friends with Damien Hirst! (the dead shark guy who was all the rage in mid-noughties art fag circles) That fact alone should force people to reappraise her from cookie-cutter media starlet, to the haute-couture Hipster Queen.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-27

Also, I concur with RoUS' appraisal of Miley. She is just as wonderful as Gaga, but for different reasons.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-27

"The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them." - Mark Twain

"The skilled musician who chooses to play corporate turd music for a living has no edge over the shitty pop starlet who does the same" - Me

Not quite as succint

EvilHomer - 2013-11-27

Shittiness is a subjective quality; it's a matter of opinion. What I'm saying is that the *objective* critique of pop music - the "phoniness", or in-authenticity, of pop music, stemming from pop's artificial creative process - does not apply to Lady Gaga.

I'm not saying you need to like Lady Gage. But we do need to acknowledge that she is intelligent, talented, and well-informed; she is a legitimate musical artist, who may or may not be using her creative powers for evil.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-27

Look, if I was offered millions of dollars to prance around in silly little outfits while belting out the latest overproduced nursery rhyme that the industry is shilling as music I'd totally jump on that opportunity, because: millions of dollars > personal integrity.

Still, I don't think I'd deserve a dissertation on how I actually quoted Mark Twain on poetv before I was famous and so that somehow makes me better than Justin Bieber.

Janelle Monae does pop music that has artistic integrity, Gaga doesn't.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-27

But you *would* be better than Justin Bieber.

And I don't think you can say that Gaga lacks personal integrity. Again, she writes her own music, sings her own songs, designs and wears her own costumes; she is in charge of her own career. This is what she likes. This is what she wants to do. The style of music may not be to your liking, but Gaga is perfectly authentic and sincere; she is the master of her fate, and the captain of her soul.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-27

Ok, you talked me into it, let's hug.

Hooker - 2013-11-27

Also, Bad Romance is the best pop song since Beat It.

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-11-27

Yes, but objectively speaking, her music (Gaga that is ) sucks. It's trite, derivative, and sounds exactly like every other bad club/electronica act. She may in fact be a genius with the compositional skills of Hendrix, Mozart and Coltrane, but I've never heard a bit of it in anything she's recorded.

Interscope spent 25 million USD to promote her last album, and it sold something like 250K copies. 4 million was spent getting the radio stations just to play the crap. You would think from all the times she's appeared in the nude that folks would pick up on the fact that the empress has no clothes.

baleen - 2013-11-27

Lady Gaga is a boring rich artschool girl that stole everything from New York gays.
Miley Cyrus is a lost lamb desperately seeking approval.
Beyonce is an immense talent, in part because she can sing the former two divas under the table while performing amazing dances that she choreographs herself.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-27

I'd have to disagree with you there, Mister Wildcat. I find that Lady Gaga has a real knack for crafting catchy melodies and combining them with novel, rhythmic harmonies. It's not *my* style of music, either, but saying that she sounds "exactly like" every other bad club act is as unfair as claiming that Michael Jackson sounded exactly like every other 80s pop act. He did not. His music sucked (as judged through my own aesthetic standards), but within his won cultural context, Jackson was something special. I don't have to like him to acknowledge this self-evident truth.

And dammit, Adham, I came up with like a six paragraph long essay examining the concept of artistic integrity while I was at work today. I was gonna type it up now, while the idea was still fresh, but then you had to go and stop arguing with me. :(

EvilHomer - 2013-11-27

Baleen - Beyonce is alright. She is certainly a better singer than either Miley or Gaga, and yes, her dances are rather sexy. However, she doesn't take many risks with her music; it is slightly-better-than-normal pop, and nothing more. Compositionally, Beyonce's work has neither the ambition and vision of Gaga, nor the impish, anarchic self-awareness of Miley.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-27

I still disagree with you but I was flattered by being considered "better than Justice Beaver". Also I thought we had all commonly spent too many words discussing Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus.

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-11-27

Try this experiment. Over t-day dinner, hum a few bars of one of MJ's pop songs. Note how many people recognize them. Then try the same with Gaga.

I never much liked listening to MJ, but his voice was golden and he wrote some top notch pop hits. 50 years from now, people will still be listening to those songs and buying music. Gaga will disappear soon now that the albums are hemorraging money. In five or ten years time she'll be about as recognizable as Flock of Seagulls ( can you hum a few bars from some of their top selling hits? ).

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-11-27

Also: Justice Beaver would make a great porn/anime title. I'm just sayin'...

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-27

To be fair, that experiment would only be valid if you waited 20 years and then hummed a few bars of Lady Gaga's pop songs at a Thanksgiving dinner populated by people who are on average 20 years younger than you.

Still, I suspect you are right.

RocketBlender - 2013-11-27

Cleaner? We just featured a tutorial for masturbation, what more do you want?

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-27

On an unrelated note: with the move to the new server my username glitched and I couldn't log in to poetv. I was about to re-register under the name Justice Beaver because I thought it was an incredibly clever pun-name only to find out (after a brief internet search) that The Office had already thought of it: http://youtu.be/ysCOyAwwtkc

By the way, before re-registering I emailed support about the login issue thinking that (as usual) it would get no reply, but was pleasantly surprised to discover the matter was resolved within 15 minutes.

Doomstein - 2013-11-27

I had no opinion of Lady Gaga until late 2011 when my little cousins insisted on watching the Very Gaga Thanksgiving Special. Her performance was amazing, her clothes were elegant, and there was a real sincerity in her music. Some of her songs actually made me feel feelings.

http://youtu.be/D4itCPrzZQk

Pop music isn't my bag, but I do respect Gaga as an artist.

themilkshark - 2013-11-28

No guys

This is not good.

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-11-26

God what a wretched, ugly piece of shit.

5 star material.

The Mothership - 2013-11-26

yup.

Doomstein - 2013-11-27

I'd still wreck that bitch.

memedumpster - 2013-11-26

So the Grace Jones robot bodies showed up the wrong color and instead of sending them back they just popped Justin Beiber heads on them and shot them through time? Screw you, Temporal Robotics of 2765AD.

eatenmyeyes - 2013-11-26

What is the minimum quantity for ordering Grace Jones robots?

Adham Nu'man - 2013-11-26

Miley has made kittens uncool.

Fuck you Miley!

glasseye - 2013-11-26

Not even the dark lord herself has such power.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-26

Kittens are making Miley uncool.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-11-27

The cat is actually unleashing a curse of significant doom!

Protoseth - 2013-11-26

Is this one of those awards shows that doesn't have seats or was that a standing ovation at the end?

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-11-26

What?

takewithfood - 2013-11-26

Your move, Yoko.

Oktay - 2013-11-26

You mean "your move, La Loco."

Riskbreaker - 2013-11-26

CAN I HAZ SHITTY POP SINGER?

baleen - 2013-11-27

Great, now that that's out of the way.

FreeOJ - 2013-11-26

That cat gives me nightmares

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-11-27

I kind of want to ride it.

poopy - 2013-11-27

Pop and its adherents probably will be mentioned pretty early in my suicide note.

themilkshark - 2013-11-28

I fucking hate this horrible ass song. This girl also looks like a fugly version of my mom mixed with Alfred E. Neuman.
