Zizek is the only living philosopher I'm aware of who's actually saying anything coherent and valuable, in my book.

He doesn't really say much. He is one of the many, many European philosophers who constantly pull the trick of saying something absolutely, obviously wrong but shocking and "radical" and then retreating to a trivial, uninteresting claim when this is pointed out. He figured out how to make Derrida's routine (the above) even more palatable to the fake intellectuals who haunt the artistic and literary worlds.

Absolute phony. But entertaining.

There are 3 main types of philosophy:
-making up impossible utopias (Kant, Plato)
-wondering about whether philosophy is valid at all while shitting on your colleagues (Nietzsche, Chomsky)
-convincing people you aren't a mentally ill homeless man but in fact a genius (Diogenes, Zizek)

I guess I haven't heard him say anything unreasonable yet.

Incidentally, does anyone remember the specifics of that big, international conference of philosophers in the late 90s where the main topic was "why hasn't philosophy produced anything of value in the past 50 years?" I forget where and when it as (Geneva?) and what conclusions were reached (none?).

Oh, and of the three groups above I'd be most likely to trust the mentally ill homeless man, who may not always be right but has the privileged perspective of the outsider.
