i have no focus for music but i fucking love synths. all of them. digital, analog, i'll take whatever

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-16

Also that's like k worth of Eventide Ultraharmonizers in the rack behind it.

chairsforcheap - 2013-12-16

i just have a lonely 1st gen microkorg that i use as a controller for logic pro which i pirated now... with the ipad connectivity it's even more useless

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

You should try reaper, seriously. I used Cubase/Nuendo for years and use Pro Tools for work still when I have to, but Reaper buries them all in my experience.

EvilHomer - 2013-12-16

Not bad! It's no JP-8000, though.

M-DEEM - 2013-12-16

Oh yeah? You want some phat drops?

Evilhomer, I am going to be in Cambridge this evening buying one of these:

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

"Only 250" made (not sure how many were really made, probably more than that but not a lot) but nobody famous has talked it up so it isn't expensive yet. Looks like the perfect weirdo polyphonic synth to fit the hole in my setup since I sold my Korg Poly61m years ago (that one's not as weird but isn't very popular).

EvilHomer - 2013-12-17

Sweet! Watch out for the bombs, though. :(

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

More bombs?

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

People on Facebook were talking about staying inside today but I thought they were just being wimps about the cold.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

Ah, Google explained it. Fake bomb threat at Harvard yesterday, huh? It's like we're living in 1970 except with cell phones.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

Better advice is "watch out for BPD" since I'll be a tall, scruffy guy with a beard carrying a bag with strange electronic equipment in it on the subway the day after a bomb scare.

EvilHomer - 2013-12-17

You could probably have some fun with it, though! Stand up in the subway, and while reaching menacingly into your bag, shout, "Listen up, you decadent American dogs! I'm about to drop some bombs on this train!"

Then you whip out a synth and start playing some wicked sick electro beats. Everyone'll laugh and be like, ohh, THAT kind of bomb, I get it, a pun. Then BPD officers will start break dancing and it'll be PARTY ON THE SUBWAY, Old Zircon style!

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

It's OK, I'll be dressed right. Everyone trusts a man in a Cosby sweater.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

Oh man, this thing is so weird and awesome and I haven't even had time to hook up a controller or open the manual. I hear the arpeggiator is completely buggy and weird, I'm psyched to learn how to abuse that.

Can do infrasound combination tones that sound like a robot singing Sperm Swamp songs.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

Oh,a nd when I was trying to see if anyone had any information about the specs for the add-on joystick that was never released I found the source of the "only 250 made" legend and it actually seems legit - a few years ago a guy emailed the company (they make BPM detectors for DJs now) asking how many they made and one of the original developers emailed him back with that number. So it's got to be one of the rarest digital synths out there.

EvilHomer - 2013-12-17

You should make some videos of it. If JHMF can record his dumb cats, surely you can jam out for us!

EvilHomer - 2013-12-17

In somewhat related news, I still haven't bought my new keyboard. I was going to do it ages ago, but I put in for an art grant during the fall and I figure I might as well wait to see how that plays out; if I'm lucky, I could get a thousand dollars, which would help my broke ass immeasurably. I'll know whether I got it, and if so how much, by early January, so feel free to shoot me some more recommendations.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

You should get a Katzenklavier.

EvilHomer - 2013-12-17

I don't think cats support MIDI or USB, and I suspect it might violate some of the terms of my grant.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

Cats are strictly OSC.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

Evilhomer, I place the odds that we've met each other before and didn't know it at 30%.

TeenerTot - 2013-12-17

I should get my old D-70 out of the closet...

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

Show it this?

TeenerTot - 2013-12-17

He's too keyed-up about the whole thing.

badideasinaction - 2013-12-17

I have my Korg X3 that I bought back in the day as my 90s rompler, still works and makes some nice pad sounds.

I had a couple of pieces of gear jacked in a robbery but I've been replacing things with the insurance. Ableton gave me an offer I couldn't refuse so I've now got Push and Live 9.1 and I'm loving the workflow. They missed the DSI Evolver which is a lot of fun to play with at least, and I'm eyeing the Arturia Minibrute or Microbrute for some serious angry sounds, and because it's a nice cheap CV output for older or modular stuff. I haven't strayed that much into vintage, but I really should do that more often to see what hidden gems I can find in a city this size.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-17

I got an Alesis QS7.1 back in the day to use zas a midi controller (I needed one for school and it was the best feeling semi-weighted keyboard in the shop, other than the old DX7 I should have got). I never really messed with programming it since I was all about working on the computer at the time, but last spring I pulled it out and started messing with it and I'm really glad I didn't sell it. It's not the kind of thing you'll be programming live, but you can make some really weird sounding but musically useful and tweakable patches without much effort when you get a feel for the OS. Too bad the sampling function needs one brand of hard to find, PCMCIA flash memory that costs like 5 for 8 megs now, becaue I'd love to use it with my own samples.

It's totally a "bar band piano dude" kind of performance rompler and I've never heard about anyone using it for leftfield electronic type stuff at all, but you could. Somewhere in there it even has a feature where you can create a table of arbitrary CC values and assign it to a controller so you can, say, create a 16 step sequence of CC values and then cycle back and forth through them with the mod wheel, among other things. Like scratching on a step sequencer instead of a turntable.
