Arguing semantics is a sport.

jangbones - 2013-12-24

The "sport" versus "game" or "competition" or "exhibition" debate has raged unabated for decades and the terms still have no real meaning.

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-12-24

I struggled with this for a few minutes, and the best I could come up with is "If being the captain of it can get you laid, it is a sport".

jangbones - 2013-12-24

you have already layered more nuance on the term than a thousand pages of ESPN forums

memedumpster - 2013-12-24

Yes! The Enterprise is a sport!

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-24

I'd say "if it makes you fat it's not a sport" but then baseball and bowling already rule out that metric.

Kirk was a founding PUA. Alien pussy, present!

"Now let's get back to NASCAR racing! Lap 375 is already in progress. Did you see that left turn, Bryant?!?"

For What It's Worth popped up on my iPod (Android phone, but I was listening to music on it, so, "iPod"), and it got me thinking about how there used to be major complaints about how the young don't have a voice in the American zeitgeist, and how, with the rise of the Internet giving disproportionate weight to the voice of people that embrace technology, the youth have been given a massive voice and it's been even worse than before.

Anyway, watching these 40+, with notable 60+ fucks ham up their these-kids-and-their-crazy-fads shit just drove me through the roof. I've never played LoL, the Warcraft map that inspired it, and I've never watched competitive gaming, but fuck people that try to diminish it. You shits don't have a voice any more. We don't cars any more; we buy phones. You're all in the period between the end of your relevance and the beginning of oblivion. Fuck off.

Okay, I'm done.

NEEEERRRRRRDDDSSSS!!!!1!!!!!

Oh yeah and poker is totally a sport.

oddeye - 2013-12-24

What kind of point is it that people who might enjoy esports might also enjoy star trek?

sosage - 2013-12-24

These hypocrites are on some seriously shaky ground. The only thing that has ever separated a "sport" from other game types is the need for participants to be physically able and athletic. Otherwise, it falls under the same larger definition of "game".

It's too bad that all other competitive activities need to struggle against this "legitimate sports" definition. Like your favorite competitive activity will be justified if it can label itself a "sport" and until then, it's for freaks and geeks. It's a ridiculously outmoded concept. One of several things that needs to be retired with the Baby Boomer generation.

sosage - 2013-12-24

Did not mean that as a reply...stars then?

theSnake - 2013-12-24

Wow who knew jocks and their hangers on were so insecure about their little club. Is this the adult equivalent of making fun of kids for lettering in Band or Chess?

Vaidency - 2013-12-24

So that League of Legends tournament filled a stadium with cheering fans and attracted 20 million+ online viewers?

Most professional sports league executives would KILL to attract that kind of audience. The last game of the World Series only drew 19 million viewers this year.

So yeah, bring out some old guys to tell us about how they don't get it.
