True story: I knew a guy who was a good egg, but kinda ugly and socially inept. He took up coorespondance with a girl in the Phillipines, through some mail order bride business. The big day came, and he packed his bags to meet the girl and family. Some weeks past, and he returned, alone. Seems the girl rejected him.

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-29 Near the end of Poe Red there was a poster whose dad got a mail order bride, and he happened to be living at home when she arrived so he liveblogged it in the forums. I missed the second half of it and nobody else seems to remember it, though, so I guess I'll never know what happened.

Anybody remember Leo Frankowski?
He was featured on the old POE. He wrote some shitty sci-fi books and had a very bigoted conservative outlook on life. He was very overweight and kind of old and busted looking.
He got a Russian bride and decided to live over there with her, and he was supposedly living the dream, even going so far as to build a castle for a home.
His plans for his home never went on a smooth timetable. Years went by and it looked like the castle was never finished.
He ended up broke and divorced and moving back to America. He died of a heart attack on Christmas, 2008.
The Russian part of his website is still up.

People have been buying and selling wives for centuries. This is far from a modern phenomenon. I guess the weirdest aspect is the geographical and cultural separation, not the idea itself. It's just an extension of a really archaic and backwards system.
