Whenever some idiot says that some garbage film like "Jerry Maguire" tugs at the heartstrings, you should push them towards a film like this. There are a bunch of great dramas from around that time that are crushingly sad.
Sirk is the lord of heart string tugging, often times so over the top as to be a comedy.
