Equal parts fucked up and too boring to be bothered.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

Yay, thanks everypony! I didn't think this was going to make it through the hopper! I'm so happy it did, because now I can say, I fucking HATE this story.

I've discussed MLD at great length on previous videos already, so I won't post a full critique right now. The short version is: it's awful, maudlin crap, that's obviously written by a man whose life experience is limited to his couch and the internet.

It purports to be a touching story about family and the pain of loving something that you will lose in the end. A lot of idiot bronies are happy to go along with this interpretation; you see 'em all the time, blubbing about how moving My Little Dashie is.

But it's actually a horror story about child abuse and how a lazy, worthless manchild-dad can ruin his daughter's life, and turn a young girl with limitless potential into a lazy, worthless manchild just like her pops. "Nature cannot overcome nurture", that's the real tragedy of this sadfic.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-07

Well, I cried during the part where Rainbow Dash learned she was a cartoon character because I went through something similar with my own father.

M-DEEM - 2014-01-07

Your father told you you're a cartoon?

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

I thought that part was kind of racist, to be honest. What's wrong with being a cartoon? If it were me, I'd have raised Dashie to value her heritage. Maybe we could have watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Cool World, then discussed the issues raised by those films for Toon-Americans.

But that would have been it as far as watching stuff together went. After those two movies, the TV would have been off and we'd have gone outside to do PT.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-07

Trying to learn about inter-reality relations through Cool World is like trying to learn about race relations through Birth of a Nation.

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-07

I never know how to rate these brony videos because I still can't tell for sure if you guys are doing some kind of long performance piece or if it's all completely sincere (the latter would earn 5 every time).

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

Can't it be both, OZ?

Caminante - the anti-miscegenation thing, right? I guess I can see how that could be construed as racist, but I think you're taking the movie too literally. Cool World was about the triumph of love DESPITE the roadblocks erected by both society and reality. I don't think Cool World was any more toonphobic than, say, Brokeback Mountain was homophobic for making the two cowboys feel guilty and then killing one of them.

At any rate, that particular discussion is irrelevant as far as MLD is concerned, because MLD is an aggressively PG-rated sadfic. Thirty pages long, and there isn't even a HINT of clop in the whole damn thing.

Xenocide - 2014-01-07

If I found Rainbow Dash in a box, I'd just keep walking. Rainbow Dash is terrible.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-01-07

Rainbow Dash is pretty awesome.

But I'd leave it on the sidewalk thanks to this conversation!

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

I'm glad you guys would resist the urge to bring Dashie home. It takes a very special kind of person to raise a pony as awesome as Rainbow Dash, and I'm afraid none of us - myself included! - would be up to the task.

(I'd still take her home, though.)

chumbucket - 2014-01-07

5 minutes is all I could give this.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-07

You should at least try watching the part at 12:58.

memedumpster - 2014-01-07

Worse than gamers.

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-07

Are there non-gamer bronies?

Shoebox Joe - 2014-01-07

I've seen some tweets from people congratulating the cast and crew with sports team in their avatars, but that was about two or three years ago. I'm too erratic with the twitter use to know for sure.

The closest I can say is this http://renegadecow.deviantart.com/

Only five pics of game stuff and it's all tucked away in a folder.

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-07

That phony Eric Satie music is just sad, even by phony Erik Satie standards.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

Don't you mean pony Eric Satie?

BHWW - 2014-01-07

My Little Brony: Sadness is Epidemic.

I think stuff like this, this sort of fanfiction and the fanprojects that cluster around it, may be just as bad as all of the creepy pony erotica and graphic Fallout crossover fiction and all that we've heard about. I mean yes, stunted man-children who indulge in all sorts of sex fantasies about animated horses is pretty bad yeah, but the people who find meaning and inspiration in a cartoon aimed at 5 year olds where squeaky voiced cartoon ponies impart simple "caring is sharing"-level lessons are maybe just as terrible...oh hell they are just as terrible.

What's also weird is that with just one online search I see these sorts of odious fan-creations spur their own fan-creations, with people rushing to present their own spin or tribute to this dreary abomination. Even if it's something as "simple" as this:

http://blackgryph0n.deviantart.com/art/Last-Moment-With-Dashie -278814013

Yes, some guy in a filthy t-shirt and ragged jeans was so moved by this story he photoshopped himself hugging a cartoon pony on his dingy carpet.

M-DEEM - 2014-01-07

Well said. I couldn't completely determine why bronies piss me off so much but I think your part about finding meaning in this garbage so late in life spells it out nicely. Sesame St. and Mr. Rogers were supposed to plant the sharing and kindness seed and then you were supposed to GROW THE FUCK UP and move on to other things, like not being a ridiculous adult.

Bronies are just so magnificently goddamn irritating.

Five for you, but one for real because I hate this shit so much.

casualcollapse - 2020-11-09

Wow, that's pretty sad

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-07

The movie is bad, and if you like it, you should feel bad.

Xenocide - 2014-01-07

Constant, unending narration is the hallmark of great filmmaking!

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

That's because it's not a film, it's a dramatic reading.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-07

If something needs an ass-load of explanation to be considered good: it's not.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

It's not good. That's the point.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-01-07

Five for PoeTv rating confusion.

Seriously, is it that hard to read the comments to figure out which of the two one-out-of-five-star ratings being used?

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

Or rather I should say, it's not good, but lots of bronies THINK it's good, which makes the whole thing even worse.

This is classic atrocity tourism, BS. We're all on your side here; it's a five-for-evil situation, not a five-for-good.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-01-07

Whoopsie. I just realized by my own logic that it would be impossible to rate the submission with out a decent description.

I kind of want to withdraw my stars now due to the fact that the description would be reliant on all fan made stuff being terrible. Even though 99% of fan-made anything tends to be horrible.

There's just always that one percent chance!

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

Yeah, Caminante is usually pretty deadpan, and it may be hard for some people (especially people who've never experienced My Little Dashie before) to parse the irony. I believe that's what happened here: BS, Xenocide, et al, came into this thinking that they were expected to think this was good.

Still, Caminante's description is materially correct: MLD is indeed one of the most beloved and celebrated fanfics in the brony community. When I first stumbled upon it about a year ago, I thought the whole thing was a joke - like how everyone acted like Chuck Norris was the biggest badass on earth, back in the day. But then I realized that it wasn't a joke, and people honestly thought My Little Dashie was the best fanfic they'd ever read - sort of like how everyone started believing that Chuck Norris was the biggest badass on earth, within a week after the Chuck Norris meme started.

Oh well. At least you understand, Shoebox!

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-07

I thought we all understood each other, but you guys don't understand me at all! I thought we were friends!
(Runs out of house crying)

Shoebox Joe - 2014-01-07

Walking Night! I didn't meant it that way!
(Pouts and lays down)
Why doesn't any pony understand ME!?

Xenocide - 2014-01-07

I rated it down because it is bad, and furthermore, not good.

Gmork - 2014-01-07

I can clear up the confusion here - Cam thinks any old crappy thing deserves 5 for evil, and I am of the opinion shared by Xenocide that not every bad thing is bad AND interesting.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-07

Well, I hope you guys are happy. You made Caminante cry.

There's no arcane mysteries to be solved here, fellas.

Point, click, type, click, done.

Gmork - 2014-01-07

This isn't a mini movie, this is just a singing telegram. Why am I bringing balloons to a funeral anyways?

BHWW - 2014-01-07

It's a funeral alright, and what's being uncermoniously buried in a cheap, tacky coffin is human dignity.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-01-08

Say I'm your momma.

Because I live about 20 minutes from UCB theatre and watch their free shows whenever I feel like it.

casualcollapse - 2020-11-09

I am seething with envy, and to see a UCB quote in the wild is very nice even if it's been buried on this website for quite some time

Paracelsus - 2014-01-07

Ok, too much Brony shit now.
