What, no horribly uncomfortable unskirt shots of Patty and Selma?

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

Well, two problems. One, Miyazaki's not that into upskirt shots. Two, Patty and Selma are middle-aged women.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

Meant as a reply to Kabbage.

RocketBlender - 2014-01-14

Miyazaki is about the only Japanese man that can resist the urge to sexualized his own characters. Hell, I hesisitate to even call any of his work anime. It's brilliant of it's own right.

Kabbage - 2014-01-14

Was referencing the wealth of upskirts that pop up in the otherwise delightful Kiki's Delivery Service

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

I'm pretty sure Totoro was an allegorical representation of a fat pedophile who went feral from PTSD following World War II, but hell if Miyazaki's not good at keeping it in his pants.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

As an interesting aside, there's a popular theory which states that My Neighbor Totoro is actually a surreal retelling of a notorious Japanese child murder case. The theory garnered so much attention that Studio Ghibli itself felt pressured to issue an official denial. The lying bastards.

Kbbagae - sure, I guess if you're into the occasional shot of formless granny bloomers. I didn't say he's never used upskirt shots before, merely that he's not that into them. They are only ever incidental, and he always limits them to those times when plot and logic dictates that they should occur.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

(not that I'm trying to pass judgement on anime directors who DO embrace upskirt filmmaking. The dude who did Highschool of the Dead is no less an artist than Miyazaki; they simply choose to express their vision in different ways.)

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

*sorry, Kbbagae should read Kbageba

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-14

Nothing gets an otaku's blood heated up like shots of 19th-century pantaloons.

Hell, just look at Touhou.

Kabbage - 2014-01-14

I dunno. They could have done it in some way where she wasn't constantly flashing her underwear. I think it's something that matters less as time goes on, and the team that made the movie probably didn't think much of it, but it prevents me from wanting to show it to my nephew or kids in general.

Just an odd decision. I'm not saying Miyazaki's "into upskirts," only that he made a weird-ass decision in giving a witch a skirt and setting most camera angles behind her as she flies around. There are a million ways around this.

Gmork - 2014-01-14

Hey look, a shoehorned thing that isn't that horrible.

Xenocide - 2014-01-14

For Apu's line at the end. And the music, which is some of the best the show has had.

bluiker - 2014-01-14

How to tell a joke in 2014: remind people that things exist

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

It's not a joke, it's a touching homage.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-17

You nailed it. Reference humor is pathetically uninspired. This is Family Guy quality.
OH I SEE THEY PUT THE CHARACTERS IN IT LIKE THE OTHER CHARACTERS HA HA HA...

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-01-14

I can't hate this.

Although, I will say that, as someone who last saw a new episode of The Simpsons in like 1999 or 2000 (it was joking about the Y2K and Bart and Homer end up dying at the end after ejecting themselves from a rocket filled with Pauley Shore and Rosie O'Donnell...yeah), the animation...I dunno, it just feels like it's really lost something over the years that it had in earlier seasons. It looks very much like Adobe Flash animation now. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just never expected The Simpsons to look like that.

Unless that's just this one seen done like that intentionally.

bac - 2014-01-15

They revamped the animation after the movie and some of the items on the show (changing the opening credits, they got an hdtv instead of the old one and other such shit).

Wander - 2014-01-14

Well done and boring and not funny or interesting.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-01-14

Yeah, it was pretty pointless. But then so is everything on the Simpsons. Which used to be so relevant and cutting edge and now can't manage to do anything but offer up lame parodies or homages so BOOOO.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-14

Also, everything done by Miyazaki! Ooooooo, ouch.

deadpan - 2014-01-14

Strangely joyless.

Gmork - 2014-01-14

my 5 was for the evil of all the 2-starrer's points combined

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-17

You have terrible taste Gmork.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-15

Boring. Call me when they make a tribute to Junko Mizuno or Junji Ito.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-15

Kisirian or Toshio Maeda get my vote.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-16

I wouldn't mind seeing a faithful recreation of Mami's final battle from Madoka, either.
