Oh God, it's TKE.

They had a chapter at my alma mater. My senior year, someone was raped at a party there. The frat was put on probation for a semester and the perpetrator was expelled. Then the year after I graduated, their probation was lifted, and then reinstated like a week later after a violent fistfight broke out on lawn outside their house. They were finally kicked off campus a few weeks later, then another fight occurred in almost the same way, but with two different combatants.

TKE had the reputation of being the frat for guys who weren't athletic enough for the jock frat, but too preoccupied with coolness to join the nerd frat. They were basically Trying Too Hard House.

That's right, there is only one kind of person at every fraternity. ALL COLLEGE MOVIES ARE TRUE. Your bra bomb better work, nerdlinger.

Cena_mark - 2014-01-21

Looks like they'll be on double secret probation.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-21

I thought it was the Kappa Alphas that were all about "The Old South" and trying to bring a fresh, young take on old-fashioned racism to our nation's universities?

Besides, it's not like overprivileged white kids need a lot of encouragement to hate minorities, even if they've never met one.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-01-21

Same here, Xeno. They had a rep of being the date rape / gang bang frat. There was a girl on my dorm floor that would go to the open Sat. nite mixer, get drunk, then end up in some horrible situation with multiple brothers. Sunday morning, she'd be all teary eyed relating the tales. A week later, she'd be back at the Sat. nite mixer. Perhaps they had a sensitive side we did not see...

kingarthur - 2014-01-21

Kappa Alpha's, at least at Ole Miss, annually hold a Southern Ball where they arrive in Confederate uniforms with girls in antebellum dresses. All white, of course. The Betas (I forget the full name of the fraternity) were thrown off campus for a while for taking two potential white brothers, scrawling racist slurs all over them, and then leaving them in their underwear to walk around nearby Rust College, a historically black university. It is commonly referred to at Ole Miss as "The Beta Incident". It's also fun to note that all new Ole Miss freshmen and transfer students are required to take a half-semester, once a week class on not raping or being racist. It seldom works.

kingarthur - 2014-01-21

As in, I took that class as a freshman and it was actually stated by the instructor that girls frequently lie about being raped to cover up embarrassment at a one night stand. Stay classy, Ole Miss.

infinite zest - 2014-01-21

Colleges just kind of work that way: A week after I started at UW there was controversy because they photoshopped a black guy's face into a bunch of cheering Badgers fans to show "diversity" for their brocure. I was about ready to pack up and drop out right then and there.

Nominal - 2014-01-22

Did they trash the homecoming parade in a hilarious fashion?

yogarfield - 2014-01-22

it's not just ole miss. i went to school in the south, and on some fraternal holiday i had the pleasure of seeing a range rover full of confederate soldiers sit around and bump jeezy. white people are hilarious.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-22

I went to school in the Northeast. We had a lesbian rugby team, and one freshman spent a semester walking across the country, handing out anti-war leaflets...?

The Mothership - 2014-01-21

oh god those kids are so lily white.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-21

No white people tag? The fuck?

That guy - 2014-01-21

Aaahhhh!
Not cool.
At the end of the 'make MLK day a holiday' business, Arizona was the last state to hold out.

That's right. Alabama, Mississippi etc were quicker to approve of the day as a federal holiday than Arizona.

I don't really believe in blanket statements like 'never imitate anyone'. But this shit is clearly mean-spirited and ignorant.

kingarthur - 2014-01-21

To be fair, the assholes here in Mississippi made sure that Robert E. Lee's birthday and Martin Luther King's birthday are BOTH state holidays AND celebrated ON THE SAME DAY.

That guy - 2014-01-22

holy crap, I had no idea
segregated holiday
kudos Mississippi

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-21

Good fucking riddance. I hope all frats follow suit and die off.

infinite zest - 2014-01-21

There was one of these MLK parties back in Madison Wisconsin at the University Club. The watermelons were for Jungle Juice (it's a popular college drink, but still..) and the music was apparently all Wu Tang. These people are either completely ignorant, or racist, or probably both but don't really know it because, well, they're a fraternity at one of the most segregated campuses in the country.

The problem, especially for the investigators, is going to be finding anything that was intentionally an act stemming from racism here. Wearing "hood" gear, striking "gangsta" poses, tweeting and showcasing a watermelon jungle juice cup isn't really much worse than a white person high-fiving a black person saying "Happy MLK Day" and acting like s/he understands what it's like because they listen to Kanye too: unfortunately, if this had been a party on any other night of the year, there would probably be no controversy.

Xenagama Warrior Princess - 2014-01-22

Granted there was a club (Splash, I think?) in Jacksonville that put an advertisement in the local rag.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Day! Half off all Drinks!!

And nobody raised protest to putting it in the paper before it was printed - hell, nobody thought it was a bad idea in the first place.

Nobody.

At All.

Fuck You, Jacksonville.

infinite zest - 2014-01-22

It's a poor judgement call for sure, but if "Half off all Drinks!" was all it said I don't see too much of a problem. Drinking alcohol to celebrate someone's life is a pretty standard practice, and given that many people have MLK day off, the bar probably saw it as an opportunity to bring in more people on a Monday.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-22

Yeah, could you propose a better way to celebrate than half-priced booze?

exy - 2014-01-22

Free booze
