I'm not going to lie. I have half-halfheartedly kept up with the Chris Chan saga over the years. Some time it pops up here. On a rare day, I get an urge to read the ED entry. I feel bad about what happens some times and I would never even think of contributing to this shit, yet, there I go, keeping up with it some times.

But.

Fundamentally, it is nothing but a bunch of maladjusted internet-types harassing someone with clear mental health issues. Now the point of all this is simply this: I feel perfectly fine laughing at the douche in this video. He deserves his own medicine.

gravelstudios - 2014-02-01

I discovered Chris Chan fairly recently (in part because of videos posted on this site). I'm now addicted. I've spent literally hours reading the Wiki that is devoted entirely to his life (in fact, I think I crashed it). I would never try to contact him, neither IRL nor online, but there's something about him that fascinates me. I've said it before: if he had any sense, he'd sell the rights to his life story. I'm sure he'd make far more than his 'tugboat'.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-02-01

I wasn't aware being an irresponsible, spoiled, self-absorbed idiot was a mental health issue so much as an undesirable personality type.

Cena_mark - 2014-02-01

Obviously none of us are mental health professionals who can evaluate him, but it does seem like he's got some issues. I've been keeping up with his adventure for a few years now. I find the appeal in it to be like the Truman Show. Even though this Truman knows he's being watched he still seems to have very little control in his life.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-02-01

Yeah, the big running gag with Chris-Chan is that his mental illness is responsible for about 10% of his current situation, yet receives 110% of the blame. I've worked with a lot of mentally ill people, myself included, and there's a strange paradox at play when dealing with them: You have to acknowledge the severity of the illness, but at the same time you can't patronize the victim by treating them like some Stepford Spouse incapable of making basic decisions due to The Disease.

A couple years ago I was tutoring a class full of people how to pass the exit exam for California's equivalent of a GED, the CAHSEE. And on the very last day, one of my students, a 20 year-old high school dropout, mentioned in passing that he was a High Functioning Autistic, just like Chris. I was floored. He was handsome, had a girlfriend and stable job, liked to skateboard and had as many hobbies as a normal person. I asked how he did it. How did he hide his crippling disease so well? And he told me he could pass off as "normal" through sheer will and hard work. He would spend hours and hours memorizing basic patterns of speech, use flash card to simulate facial expressions, and through hundreds of hours of training, develop a basic proficiency in the skills we take for granted every day.

Obviously, I don't advocate bootstrapping as a solution for every mental illness. You can't defeat severe autism with hard work any more than you can cure AIDS by being tough and cool. But the moment I told that dude about Chris-Chan, because fuck everything it was the last day of class anyway, there was a look in his eyes so raw and nakedly contemptuous that I realized in one moment how completely full of shit Chris really is.

With all that said, A-Log is just a regular asshole.

The simple reply to that is that Chris Chan is not a high-high-functioning autistic like your golden boy with a job was. He is an extremely low functioning "high functioning" autistic. He is not capable of interpreting reality in a way that lets him "function" in society. That's why it's called an autism "spectrum."

On one side you have people who are paralyzed and incapable of talking, who stare at walls and every once and a while scream, shit their pants and repeatedly slam their heads against the floor, and on the other you have Bill Gates. I have worked with and gone to school with autistics on various sides of the high functioning spectrum.

Some of them you can't pin as autistic until you realize that they do not interpret social cues properly and that they have to really make an effort to understand feelings and other intuitive stimuli. In a screenwriting class I was in once an autistic girl talked for 10 minutes about Duran Duran and Star Trek until the teacher had to politely remind her that we didn't have time for it, so she started crying. Technically this girl was a "high functioning" autistic, she was able to interact and even hold a job at McDonald's, but the function part refers to their brain function, not their ability to function in the real world.

I am amazed at the mental olympics people have to perform in order to defend all the time they've invested into Chris Chan.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-02-02

Baleen: You're completely missing my point. Of course autism is a spectrum--to me, that's part of the joke. Christian is genuinely angry at people with Asperger's or lesser forms of his disorder are taking "credit" or whatever away from his struggle when, as you said, there are so many people with worse forms of autism. Chris' version is obviously treatable; the problem, the very human problem, is that he refuses to seek help or listen to it when supplied.

At some point you have to treat people with mental illness as people and not as drooling sacks of meat lacking any semblance of self-awareness because they JUST DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. It doesn't fucking work that way.

And I don't know why anyone would need to do mental gymnastics to justify loving CWC any more than they'd need to justify loving Homer Simpson. Christian is hilarious. That's all anyone needs to say.

baleen - 2014-02-02

Tough love I guess.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-02-01

It's like a sad, self-inflicted eugenics experiment.

Except they do it to themselves so we can laugh about it. I wonder how many layers deep this whole thing goes; but I'm guessing it's more of a cell-structure like them-there terrorists use, like a mole-warren full of poop and regret and paradoxically, obliviousness. You'd think obliviousness wouldn't take up any space, but these people pack the rafters full of it.

baleen - 2014-02-01

Look at that fat ugly fuck. Disgusting. Lose some weight, fatass.

Cena_mark - 2014-02-01

Isn't this fat idiot the same guy who did that awful "stand up" where there were no jokes, just him ranting about Chris Chan? This guy is pathetic.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-02-01

They all look the same.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-02-01

Yes, and I have never seen it. But I want to. So, so bad.

StanleyPain - 2014-02-02

Don't forget, he had to spend the first half of his stand-up routine actually explaining to the audience who Chris Chan is.

Sudan no1 - 2014-02-01

Thank you loser guy, for publicly embodying the intense sadness of stalking Cwc.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-01

"NO REALLY GUYS I'VE WATCHED A MAN ORGASM INSIDE A BLOWUP DOLL, you say you don't believe me, well I'LL SHOW YOU, I'LL WATCH IT AGAIN!!!!"

"And now I've got to go watch PORN... right guys, huh, amiright?"

Ugh, what a miserable little toad.

Now, I'm not gonna lie, I love ChrisChan. I think he's wildly entertaining, and I've been following his adventures for years, to perhaps a slightly less-than-healthy degree... but as for his trolls, my feelings range from disgust to complete indifference. Even the "important" ones, like Liquid, Jack Thaddeus, and Clyde Cash, they just blur into the background for me; to this day, I can't tell you what exactly they did without first consulting the CWCiki. As for A-log, well, I didn't even know he was a thing until yesterday.

I have heard Chris mention his name before, but I always assumed A-Log was a CWCism for "asshole".

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-02-02

Like most accomplished performers, Chris has his hanger-on's and wannabes. It's just further proof of my contention that Chris will be remembered as one of the great early internet performance artists. Consider the time and money invested by Miley Cyrus to shock people; Chris does it x10 better with a few hundred dollars of action figures and dildoes. HE'S NOT REALLY EVEN TRYING!

It's a mystery to me why people want to "fix" him. What on earth for? All one wants to do is keep him at arms length, which this technology is eminently suited to do. Also, someone needs to curate his work so as to be more accessible. The wiki and whatnot is all over the map and more about the idiots surrounding him. The only interest I have in them is that they provide the backstory and material for some of Chris's more fantastic gyrations.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-02

The best piece of CWC scholarship I've seen is probably the Annotated Sonichu, a tumblr blog that offers a page by page analysis of the first four Sonichu comics (the Pre-(troll)Crisis "Golden Age" of Sonichu). It's insightful, well researched, and an absolute delight to read; if you haven't seen it yet, I urge you to check it out!
