You can kidnap a baby hummingbird and tell everyone it's abandoned, but that puts you in a different category, karmically.

When I was in college, I was friends with (and even dated once) a girl who 'rescued' a maple leaf that had sprouted from a sidewalk. For a while, she kept it wrapped up in a damp paper towel, sticking out of her backpack. She named it 'Tree'. Most of her friends humored her. My response was something along the lines of "you've got to be kidding me--that's really stupid." It sure didn't do me any favors.
