...which is probably what would still end up happening if that had been a body falling instead.

exy - 2014-02-11

WRT pigs

Nominal - 2014-02-11

Is this real? How did the fall get the video to look like that (unless this was a film camera?)? And the manufacturer should make this their commercial if it really did survive a fall like that.

infinite zest - 2014-02-11

Not that I spend a lot of time in them, but pig pens are probably softer than powdery snow. I'm guessing it's a go-pro, and so far I've seen them take some pretty hard hits on concrete and ice. I was shooting a video on a hike one time and dropped my iphone and it did something similar to that film effect. In my case it was maybe a 100 foot drop down a really steep trail. If you have a smart phone, invest in an otter box. The phone was fine.

He says in the description that he found it 8 months later though, which means it probably went through rain, snow, who knows what else and was buried in pig shit. Yeah if this is real, I want that camera. If it's fake, that'll do pig.

exy - 2014-02-11

Maybe it's fake and I haven't seen anything quite like that from a digital camera--but then again I also haven't seen other purported dropped-from-a-plane loose camera footage--but there is a practical limit to how quickly the image capture chip can refresh its image, and if your camera is spinning pretty quickly relative to that speed, which maybe it is if it's just been accelerated by a few hundred mile an hour winds, then I feel like such a stroboscopic effect is plausible. But then I'm ignorant. Anyway, if it's fake, I say, not bad.

fermun - 2014-02-11

The way that the effect causes the curve looked similar to the propeller aliasing you see when you take a picture of a propeller with a digital camera, I took it as further confirmation of it being a real thing taken with a digital camera.

fermun - 2014-02-11

http://vimeo.com/22302989 here is how a GO PRO camera captures a propeller. Looks like a very similar aliasing effect.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-12

Also the camera didn't have to survive 8 months, just the storage medium (SD card, right? I've never used a GoPro, although I've thought about getting one to record shows).

RockBolt - 2014-02-12

Its just rolling shutter, that camera was spinning in the wind at terminal velocity there's no reason it shouldn't look like that. The spin rate just happened to match up with the shutter speed towards the end there, its cool to see actually. Go Pro's and their like are small and light and don't have much in the way of moving parts, and bouncing onto the dirt of a pig pen seems survivable based on my experience with those cameras. Even if the waterproof housing was compromised, SD cards are impressively robust, people find cameras in rivers and scuba diving in the ocean and its usually not a chore to get info off the card even when the camera is a corroded lump.

It'd be a bizarre amount of work to fake this because as this thread shows the vast majority of people don't know about rolling shutter in CMOS sensors or what it would even look like in this situation. Why bother to fake something in a realistic way that people are unfamiliar with? Its like this:

http://www.snopes.com/photos/gruesome/interrogate.asp

People jump to the assumption that the footage was faked because it doesn't look like their expectation of the situation, ignoring the fact that their expectation has been entirely informed by completely fake movies and TV shows.

Nominal - 2014-02-12

Well, I figured a free falling camera wouldn't spin nearly that fast, that after a couple seconds would just straighten out to the position of least air resistance.

RockBolt - 2014-02-12

Quite the opposite, those cameras are really light. And there are also tons of other videos on youtube of this exact same thing happening, it spins and bounces and survives

This one fell out of the case, bounced and managed to film all the skydivers landing nearby:

Enjoy your time in the spotlight while you can, Mr. Pig, for soon you will be a porkchop :(

Billy the Poet - 2014-02-11

My god, it's full of pigs.

(Probably fake.)

duck&cover - 2014-02-11

Alright, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my closeup.

American Standard - 2014-02-11

And of course, since it's a pig, its first reaction is BUT CAN I EAT IT THO.

SolRo - 2014-02-12

the other things a pig could do

- run from it

- shit on it

- hump it

- download the contents to its laptop to try find out the owner and return it.

Xenocide - 2014-02-12

Why would something fall from the sky and not be food? It's a question which baffles pig theologians to this day.

DavidBowiesLuckyTennisBall - 2014-02-12

twirling twirling twirling towards freedom tag?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-02-12

I thought digital cameras didn't have horizontal hold problems! Stupid technology!

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-02-17

5 stars for effort, either way.
