I'm at about the "concerned parent" age but I don't have kids, and have wondered if I'd let my 14 year-old daughter go to this show, especially seeing stuff like this. But then I remembered that I was into KMFDM, Ministry, stuff like that around 14 and while it did help me shed the skin of the perfect little alterboy I was when I was younger, it didn't effect me negatively either.

Miley (or more likely her entourage of people who write her songs, design her ideas) is a genius, shedding that Hannah Montana good girl aesthetic for something not necessarily "bad," just "liberating." Her fanbase is more than welcome to go with her, so long as I don't get twerked on when I'm grocery shopping.

I like Miley Cyrus, and I'm quite intrigued by the Wrecking Ball video. I saw a video a couple of weeks ago by Laci Green, a you tube sex educator/feminist (we've had her videos in here before, and she does a remarkably good job of explaining what a sex object is, and it's not just about sex, it's also about passivity. A wrecking ball, even one with a naked girl sitting on it, is not passive...it's not an object; it's a subject... but it is vulnerable. It's a weapon that feels pain. I think it's a neat, potent symbol of the damage people do in relationships, to each other and to themselves.

Could have done without the part where she licks the sledgehammer, though.

I, too, watch the Wrecking Ball video for feminist reasons.

Assuming we're all of relatively similar ages, you probably remember the protests surrounding Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" and how parents, feminist organizations, etc. all got their panties in a bunch, making claims that the song advocated rape and humiliation. The counter-argument was that it was satire, the "fuck you like an animal" part representing social and moral decay and whatnot to a dancable beat, which in part was the reason why it became a Billboard chart topper.

Flash forward to (shit.. has it really been almost 20 years) later, and it's the same argument surrounding Miley. I guess the -- taking the "concerned parent" approach again, as if I had a daughter -- problem I have is that the transition happened too fast. If Trent Reznor had ever been more of a Justin Bieber, talking about bowling and crushes, and then unleashed a new "hardcore" image, I'd expect the same backlash, as boys who look up to him want to do what he does because he gets (got!?) the girls.

This just seems like a whole bunch of girls screaming to something they completely don't get, but don't care because it's Miley doing it.

Like when Hammer tried to compete with the more hardcore guys, shedding his old image. It works for some.. Justin Timberlake was able to write some pretty good (for pop anyway) songs and Mark Whalberg was.. well I guess he's not doing that Funky Bunch thing so much anymore..

Seriously, though, can you imagine how awesome it would have been if they'd had camera phones and LiveLeak back in Woodstock? Or the Elvis days? Or even better, at the opening of The Rite of Spring?

If you were my grandson I'd have excommunicated your ass by now.

I don't know, if they'd had phone cameras for Woodstock a lot of people would have found out that all the bands were too high to actually play well and it was impossible to reach by car anyhow well before they got there and turned back around. Of course only a few thousand would have gone to it anyway because the Youtube live stream's just as good and free, right?

Camera phones dispell myth and promote authenticity, while simultaneously democratizing and communalizing experience! When you think about it like that, camera phones would have out-Woodstocked Woodstock.

I don't know anything about the dude's personality or character flaws or whatever, but there was nothing like Ren & Stimpy before or after it. There are very few successful artists that can say that about their work.

If you wonder what it would've been like without a lot of input from other writers and artists, just watch the Adult Cartoon episodes. They're really terrible. Really really terrible. And yes, I really like the aired Ren and Stimpy episodes a lot. John K. is a terrible person.
