Haha last time something like this came out it was Kreayshawn and I literally thought it was a joke and then on POE music forum people were all talking about how good it was and I knew good music was over and rock was dead

ashtar. - 2014-02-22

everything that is wrong

yogarfield - 2014-02-23

I wrote out a sincere and lengthy piece on corporate data-mining, fake street cred, and "fuck this I hate this", but I deleted it when I realized GWAR said it best in Skulhedface:

"Appropriate with extreme prejudice."

Five years ago these are the same type of kids who would have been in a Christian Metalcore band with an album called "Screw the Devil!"

yogarfield - 2014-02-23

ps suggesting the tag "fuck white people".

Born in the RSR - 2014-02-23

Die Antwoord they ain't.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

So I don't know enough about South African culture to decide, is Die Antwoord as horrifically classist (and possibly crypto-racist) as they seem? Some of their songs are pretty good but I always got an "upper class art school kids pretending to be 'white trash'" kind of feeling from it, and that shit is the worst.

VaultDweller13 - 2014-02-23

^^ nailed it.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

I mean I could be wrong, but as far as I know only about 10% of South Africans are white and I'm fairly sure they don't tend to be the ones who live like the entirely white casts of the Die Antwoord videos are shown living.

VaultDweller13 - 2014-03-04

yeah, they came out of a viral net campaign launched by Sony i believe. They are indeed art college graduates, their basic schtick was to pitch "zef" to Americans(basically the white, poor Afrikaans who appropriate some mannerisms of the colonized African cultures after prolonged contact) as a novelty to laugh at. Their videos heavily appropriate Zulu iconography and elements without providing their context to amplify the "freak" effect. What they are doing is basically reviving the Victorian World Fair logic, you know tapping into the thirst for gazing to the "freaks" who were kept in a cage.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-23

Haha! They're describing the song structure as they rap it! How very meta and self-aware! This is the part where I sing along, why yes, in most contexts I guess that would be the case, maybe not this song in particular because the hook is kind of irritating and honestly I don't feel much like singing right now, BUT YES! In principle, I understand the concept to which you are referring!

Hahaha!

I wish these people would stick to ukuleles, where they belong.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

Fuck that, ukuleles used to be good before these fuckers got hold of them.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

Anyhow, Robert Wyatt did the "singing about the structure of the song" thing back on the first Matching Mole album in the early 70s and that's literally the only time I've heard it done without being unbearable. Because you have to be as talented a songwriter as Robert fucking Wyatt to pull that shit off.

exy - 2014-02-23

This is the theme to Garry's show / The opening theme to Garry's show / This is the music that you hear as you watch the credits / I'm almost halfway finished / How do like it so far / This is the theme to Garry Shandling's show

Nothing implied about songwriting talent but I liked it when I was a kid.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

I still like it, that takes me right back to 6th grade. And I didn't even watch the show, I just rolled with a crew who liked that song (i.e. the outcasts who were too weird to be bullied but too square to be feared).

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-02-23

This is painful

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

I don't even want to share this to make fun of it, that just encourages them. Cf. BrokenCYDE, Attack Attack, Kreayshawn, etc. etc.

misterbuns - 2014-02-23

i was cutting flash frames in music videos back in 2007.

fuck you.

also how about renting another lens?

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

You mean how about borrowing another iPhone?

misterbuns - 2014-02-23

:)

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-02-23

Like Kanye West, but with less bags over the head.

oddeye - 2014-02-23

This is FUCKING SHIT so 5 stars I guess.

VaultDweller13 - 2014-02-23

Mockney, mef, and last but not least Mip Mop. A can of ass whipping is what they need. self-absorbed , talentless, exploitative pricks.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

It's too late for an ass whipping to help, at this point it would just strengthen their resolve.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

Like, remember when FSU punched Moby? He just claimed that and it was a homophobic hate crime because they didn't know who he was and it happened near a gay bar (even though in the video you can hear one of them yell "look, it's Moby" or something close t that before they go after him).

VaultDweller13 - 2014-03-04

LOL i totally forgot about that, good call.

baleen - 2014-02-23

I am going to shit in the pussies of the moms that made you and sell them to the Guggenheim.

That guy - 2014-02-24

I had more fun reading the comments and just imagining the song.

Old People - 2014-07-26

Me too. 5'd without even listening.
