I remember when regular ephedrine went off the market, because I used to have much worse asthma than I do now and it's a perfectly good bronchodilator (and a nice study-aide). When my store stopped carrying it, most cooks in the midwest at least switched to pseudo, and when they stopped carrying those, they switched to some tea extract called theanine or something that has similar effects as ephedrine and is a lot cheaper. I've never tried meth and never want to, but I just got to know these things from the regulars who used to buy ephedrine and still came back for brillo pads and those little glass tubes with roses in them. For crack and meth trappers, they were pretty nice people.

On a side note, as soon as the ban started going into effect, I think around 2001(?) We used to carry ephedrine in the big bottles, and then we switched to the smaller ones with only five pills inside.. this one regular who kind of looked like Krusty the Clown would come in every day and buy an old bottle's worth of the packets. One day he came in twice, and my co-worker asked him "so.. did you already eat all the ephedrine we sold you earlier?" He just stares at him, smiles, rips open all the packets and crunches them up in his mouth, and downs it with a bottle of pepsi.
