Stolen and watermarked! The best kind of dupe.

Cena_mark - 2014-03-05

Its a dupe, but this is a really classic and shameful one.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-03-06

I agree. This is the best kind of dupe.

EvilHomer - 2014-03-05

Typical response of a tyrant.

But yeah, for corn's sake, shut up fatbeard. This is NOT the venue. I've heard *little kids* call her Princess Molestia; I think that might be a sign you should tone it down and keep it in your pants.

Cena_mark - 2014-03-05

I'm sure you think they should introduce those aspects to the show. After all, you're all about the creators putting in web references for the bronies.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-03-06

It's pretty comforting to know every person involved in My Little Pony is socially awkward in their own magical way. You've got Self-righteous Cartoon Pony Voice Actress, Holy Shit Dude Are You Like 60 Years Old And Emceeing A My Little Pony Conventions, and Alpha Zoidsperg.

I'm OK with them adding little shout-outs for the fans, and why shouldn't I be? It's fun, and it's kind of sweet. It's good for artists to be aware of their audience, to engage with their audience on a personal level from time to time, especially now that we're living in a social media world.

Now, do I think they should add references to grimdark fanon? That's ultimately up to them, but I've ranted at some length about my own feelings re: the darker aspects of MLP before, and to fully explore the issue I'd need a lot more time - like maybe my own video presentation. But in brief, I think grimdark is a bit... easy. It's a bit too comfortable. My Little Pony can be a very challenging show to watch, because it's so different from what we of the younger generations are used to. We children of the 80s and 90s are products of postmodernism. Cynicism, nihilism, irony, violence, fear - from the stories we've told ourselves, this is what we know, these are the cultural narratives on which we were raised. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, we find cruelty and snarkieness comforting. But My Little Pony is not like this. It's extraordinarily hard for us, after a lifetime of jading, to watch a show as sincere and postPoMo as My Little Pony, to accept that, yeah, maybe a good story CAN be made from colorful ponies who are simply just friends, who really do care about each other. So this, I think, is why the fandom sometimes needs to embrace things like Apple.mov or Cupcakes. It's a safety blanket, it helps some fans allay their fears.

It's similar to the way in which 1980s horror movie directors injected humor into slasher flicks; it's a tone shift meant to take the edge off and put the audience at ease. So... is it wrong for some fans to embrace grimdark? No, it's actually kind of touching. But I also think that they're taking the easy way out. Grimdark is not challenging enough, and I think the show is far more powerful when it stays the course.

^ but I would genuinely like the writers to explore Pinkie's experiences with childhood trauma. Maybe not explicitly, but in a bit more depth; after all, the show has made it quite clear that she's emotionally fragile (Party of One), that her family was cruel, cold, and abusive (Cutie Mark Chronicles), and that Pinkie now has an almost pathological need for a surrogate family identity (Pinkie Apple Pie). Given what we know about famous "party kids" of the real world (such as Michael Alig or James St James), and given the weight of additional circumstantial evidence (Pinkie is the only mane pony who is not engaged in fully independent living; she still cohabits with middle-aged adults, which strongly suggests trauma-rooted developmental barriers), I think it's fair to say that some degree of "Pinkamena" is intentional. Pinkie Pie is a character with an *extraordinary* amount of psychological depth, and while I do not accept the more extreme claims of the fandom, I do think the writers would be doing her (and the audience) a disservice if they failed to give her deeper subtext a serious, but respectful, look.

It's like Applejack's dead parents. I certainly don't think the writers should dwell on such issues, or make them lurid! But some children do have dead parents, some children do have an abusive family, and I think it would help these young fans if they saw that they're not alone.

There was a long time where I thought Evilhomer was strictly trolling but these days I'm leaning more toward this being real.

Spike Jonez - 2014-03-06

You stare too long into the abyss...

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-03-06

well he is evil Homer

EvilHomer - 2014-03-06

I think it's real. I HOPE it's real. I mean, I guess it's possible that I've become so saturated with irony, sarcasm, and nihilism, that I am now incapable of telling what is real and what is not; that in effect I am now trolling, not just the external world, but my very mind itself. I've thought long hard about this, but fortunately, I do not believe it to be the case, for the following reasons:

1) I don't think I was trolling. That does, of course, beg the question of whether or not my current mental state allows me to be a reliable judge of my own thoughts, but in the absence of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I believe self-awareness to be sufficient.
2) If I was trolling - that is, saying things I did not mean in order to get a rise out of people - I think I'd have caught Cena's pass and argued in FAVOR of exposing kids to dark things like Princess Molestia. In fact, if I was REALLY trolling, I don't think I would have bothered arguing at all - I would have just said something outrageous, and left my statement sans support. (related issue for another discussion - where does trolling end, and playing the devil's advocate begin?)
3) I over-analyze a lot things, many of which I have no reason to doubt my sincerity about. That's how I am, it's part of my own social awkwardness. I do this with Chomksy, with Dogecoins, hell it's even what I'm doing now. And finally...
4) I spent all last weekend making an animated painting of Fluttershy. I do not think I would do that if I were insincere, subconsciously or not.

Now, as I told Jarred some months ago, I do sometimes exaggerate a little for dramatic effect. It's the internet, we lie. (e.g. I do not really believe I am married to Rainbow Dash.) But I really do think the show is awesome, and I honestly do believe that it's got some serious artistic merit, and should be understood within the broader context of the death of the Postmodern. If we were discussing any other show, True Detective let's say, would there be any reason to doubt my sincerity?

I also stand by my analysis of Pinkie Pie - "Pinkie Pie is a character with an *extraordinary* amount of psychological depth", OK, THAT part was more than a little tongue in cheek, I admit, but the overall sentiment is sincere. With a little work, I believe she could be one of the great character studies of Western literature. We'll see what happens next week.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-06

That Lindybeige character sketch is pretty great.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-06

Also, I remember being a little kid well enough to know that little kids would come up with "Princess Molestia" on their own if nobody else did.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-03-07

Evil Homer unnerves and arouses me in equal measure.

TheOtherCapnS - 2014-03-05

Nice try, younger version of The Dude's landlord.

Xenocide - 2014-03-05

Looking to molest a cartoon character? Why not Zoidberg?

pastorofmuppets - 2014-03-06

EvilHomer - 2014-03-06

Ghost stars for Xenocide.

TheInternetisFullofGenitals - 2015-04-15

Was going to give this five stars for autistic manchild getting chewed out by Princess Celestia, but decided Xenocide should have them instead.
