All I know about this show is it causes more gayfic fanart on Tumblr between the show's protagonists than Supernatural does, and that's saying something.

My dad was in the hospital recently (twisted large intestine; he's fine) and I kept him company for about four days of it. I brought in a laptop for him and tried to find a recent TV show that was well reviewed and found this show. It does a Roger Deakins-style look quite well, and that might be enough to save it for some people, but the writing is pretty damn bad. Admittedly, I only wound up watching maybe the first four-to-six episodes, but the pointless blogger character, the main character's constant saying-what-his-problems-are-ism, Hannibal Leckter going on all these adventures with the FBI for no fucking reason, and then there's Lawrence Fishburn making a run for the worst actor in Hollywood.

I grant you it is well above average for a network show, but I disagree that it keeps its head above water, let alone is good.

That's five stars for the guy in the vlog, by the way, who is excellent for poeTV.

Hooker:

Most of your criticisms can be answered with "Watch the show," though I won't hold it against you for being too preoccupied with your sick dad to pour over TV story arcs.

The blogger, Freddie Lounds, is going to play a bigger role when the show eventually gets to Red Dragon. If you've seen the movie or read the book, you know what that is.

Graham's mental health is a key plot point, especially in the later half of the season, and his constant self-affirmations become crucial when his sense of self starts to slip away.

Hannibal works for the FBI.

The worst actor in Hollywood could not deliver the line USE THE LADIES' ROOM with that level of authority.

These days if I need some Hannibal Lecter content I just watch Manhunter, I don't even care much about watching Silence of the Lambs anymore.

Also the movie Red Dragon is awful. Book was fun.

Normally when someone says a show is using "dream logic" it means you're supposed to ignore gaping plot holes, but Hannibal couldn't make it any more obvious for you if it personally gave you encephalitis.

it's a single tone pretentious farce that owes it's existence to lars von trier's antichrist and the work of tarsiim. It contributes nothing beyond these references and has turned Lecter into a Dracula for some reason.

it's tone is so overwrought it is actually comedic.

The show--and the people behind it--are fully aware of how over-the-top it is and never take themselves too seriously. Anyone who accuses it of being too self-serious is completely missing the undercurrent of black comedy running underneath it.
