I guess this is another example of the difference between the English and the Japanese dubs. When characters died horribly in the original version, American watchers were told by the narrator that instead they went to special farms far away where they could romp and play in the sun.

It's a good thing the people who died in that big explosion were really holograms and dummies.

my two biggest beefs with this show:

1) in the american dub they constantly refer to rice balls as "donuts'

2) zyklon-b is tinted yellow not green

I have to wonder what's going through the censors' minds when they're considering translating/editing these shows to an audience more geared towards younger children. I'm know I'm not the first one to say this, but if you're going to take a show like Dragon Ball Z, edit out the nudity (makes sense) the blood (not a lot of it) and rare occasions of body parts falling off, and change all references to the afterlife as "another dimension," wouldn't you just throw your hands up and say "fuck it.. this is too much useless work for a show that's probably going to be aired at 5:30AM anyway. Let's just release it as-is, dubbed, on VHS instead"?

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-03-10

Moral outcry had a lot more influence back then.

Kid Fenris - 2014-03-10

This is a strange show in terms of what they censored and what they didn't. Lots of characters are shot with "stun guns" and run away off-camera, and yet there's a creepy quasi-date-rape scene in one of the early episodes. Weird.

I vaguely remember this, I think it came on before or after Voltron. Thing is, cartoons in the 80s had a lot more scenes like that, including Transformers getting away with all sorts of robot gore, because it was robots so they don't count. Even GI Joe had a few scenes of people actually getting shot, but the shots were just explosions, and the camera would pan down to make sure we knew they fell off a 200-foot cliff but splashed into the water, so they'd walk away unscathed.

(...because us kids obviously had a sense of empathy for the foot soldiers of COBRA...)

Jeriko-1 - 2014-03-10

Oh yeah. Like the Transformer's Movie. Prime just nods off to the Robot Afterlife. Prowl on the other hand gets fucked up like a Cybertronian Quentin Tarantino movie.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-03-10

God damn that's an awesome theme song.

Kid Fenris - 2014-03-10

That's one thing World Events Productions did well. Even Denver, The Last Dinosaur had a memorable opener.

poorwill - 2014-03-10

I forgot this existed.

This was the Japanese import part of the three space-western themed animated series that had their time in the 1980s, the others being the TMS animated "Galaxy Rangers" and "Lone Starr" which was sort of the last gasp for Filmation.

BRAVE Starr.

"Haha, this marching band will never go down without a fight! Haha! Hey, nice groceries th... oh. Those were stun beams, rig... oh god."

They certainly dress like a gaggle of saber riders.
