Fuck This Shit.

I'll save my psychic future stars for when it's confirmed to gloss over any nuance and unmarketable weirdness the characters once had in order to make either Another Family-Friendly Snorefest, or Another Painfully Trendy Tripe Buffet, Possibly Featuring Will Farrell Or Neil Patrick Harris.

jreid - 2014-03-19

*record scratch*

snothouse - 2014-03-19

Maybe you don't need to show EVERY hair?

Shoebox Joe - 2014-03-19

I actually thought was supposed to be a graphite scrawl until you said that.

At least they're acknowledging 60-200 fps doesn't really translate to good animation.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-03-20

The one head pube is a really fucking weird touch. So, a boy with severe alopecia leaves one giant pube on his head instead of cutting it short.

gravelstudios - 2014-03-19

3D? I'm curious how that's gonna work. Peanuts is just about the most 2D artwork can get. My mom will definitely want to see this. I hope my dad takes her so I don't have to.

EvilHomer - 2014-03-19

I really appreciate how principled Bill Watterson is, but having suffered through crap 3D versions of Garfield and Marmaduke and now Peanuts, it'd be nice to finally catch a break.

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-03-19

"Why couldn't my high school sweetheart have become a prostitute? It'd be nice to finally get to fuck her!"

EvilHomer - 2014-03-19

Counterpoint: fucking one's former sweetheart is better than not fucking one's former sweetheart.

Besides, if Bill got involved, I'm sure a 3D Calvin & Hobbes would be great, at least by 3D cartoon movie standards.

Xenocide - 2014-03-19

The only way Bill would get involved is if he were able to personally animate every single frame, do all the voices, compose all the music, edit the entire thing, and not allow any other human being so much as glance at the film until the premiere screening.

Bill Waterson is awesome and I love him for having the balls to know when to walk away.

Lurchi - 2015-03-19

You know they're just waiting til he's dead.

Meerkat - 2014-03-19

My first thought was "THIS BETTER BE IN 3D" and LO, it is.

All they need to do is make a standard Peanuts cartoon where Charlie Brown says "Good Grief" and Lucy pulls the football away and Snoopy dances and Woodstock lands in a cup of something and HEYO BOX OFFICE BOFFO GOLD SMASH HIT OF THE SUMMER.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-03-19

Honestly I'd prefer that to some bullshit pop culture reference shitfest set in modern times featuring throw away celebrity guests a la The Smurfs/Yogi Bear/Alvin and the Chipmunks/Marmaduke, which is what I fear it will be.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-03-19

For fuck's sake, is cel animation really dead?

This gives my soul an owie.

infinite zest - 2014-03-19

If it's done well, I've accepted 3D/cgi as the new medium. I was thinking about that watching the leaked Frozen that was in the hopper for two seconds until they took it down: movies like Wall-E, Up, Frozen.. I just kind of forget that they're not 2D. While I would've preferred a Cel Wall-E, it really didn't make a difference in the long run.

Of course, if Persepolis or Maus (if they ever go through with it) or even Doonsbury were CGI, I would have had a BIG FUCKING PROBLEM. Much as I love Schulz and Peanuts, and the more I appreciate it the older I get, Schulz did it for the kids: I'll admit that I not only had Snoopy underpants but also had the "gangsta" snoopy t-shirt in 5th grade, at least one Nintendo game.. it's not selling out, it's spreading a vision in a way that might not feel natural to us kids who grew up reading the comics, holiday specials, et al, but if the spirit of Schulz is there, I'm sure it will all work out.

If they fuck it up like they did Marmaduke, though...

EvilHomer - 2014-03-19

I would kill to see Persepolis in glorious CGI, with Jada Pinkett Smith as Marjane, Chris Tucker as the Ayatollah, and Larry the Cableguy, as himself.

Throw in a musical number where Marjane defies Islamic convention by twerking in a club to Will.I.Am and Miley, and you'll have this summer's biggest blockbuster!

BHWW - 2014-03-19

Yes, this is really kind of off-putting and kinda weird looking.

Nikon - 2014-03-19

Not going to see this.

infinite zest - 2014-03-19

I'm not going to see it either, but I kind of like the use of 3D; it almost reminds me of the transition South Park made from the paper cut-outs to what's more-or-less CGI animation made to look like the original cut-outs. I haven't seen it (nor want to) but the Peabody movie seemed to miss the point, that besides a fun segue between Rocky and Bullwinkle episodes filled with historical puns, it also featured a unique style of animation, and wasn't just about a wisecracking dog and his dumbass sidekick. If Peabody and Sherman was animated more like this, I might almost consider torrenting it.

That guy - 2014-03-19

Like the first 5 or so years of the comic strip, as well as some aspects of a few of the shows, were not particularly for kids and would go over their heads easily. I don't know if Schultz made it for the kids or not.
I know it went from subversive in the 60's to sellout in the 80's.

Gmork - 2014-03-19

Snoopy is all wrong. The whimsical simplistic drawing loses everything in the transition to 3d.

Nikon - 2014-03-19

I think that CGI elements can be added to hand-drawn cartoons well (it works for vehicles and special effects), but living things like animals and humans just look better drawn in my opinion.

Cena_mark - 2014-03-19

They sorta ripped off the beginning of Shaolin Soccer.

baleen - 2014-03-19

Ouch. Right in my childhood.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2014-03-19

Remember when you guys thought that The Lego Movie was going to be terrible?

Xenocide - 2014-03-19

Does Lego have 50 years of established characterization written by a beloved but long-dead creator? Huh. I really haven't been paying attention.

Xenocide - 2014-03-19

A Boy Named Charlie Brown is one of the most underrated cartoon films ever made, and it succeeds because it understands that Peanuts isn't about cute dancing dogs or little kids being cute. It's about the inevitability of failure, and how our relationship with it helps define us as human beings.

Looks like the makers of Ice Age 5: We Added More Dinosaurs are planning on adding to this theme with a record scratch and some aging pop culture references.

joelkazoo - 2014-03-19

"Peanuts isn't about cute dancing dogs or little kids being cute. It's about the inevitability of failure, and how our relationship with it helps define us as human beings."

Stars for that. I agree, ABNCB needs more love, if only for the profundity of this exchange alone:

Linus: Well, I can understand how you feel. You worked hard, studying for the spelling bee, and I suppose you feel you let everyone down, and you made a fool of yourself and everything. But did you notice something, Charlie Brown?

Charlie Brown: What's that?

Linus: The world didn't come to an end.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-03-19

My grandmother was a schoolteacher and she taught me to read early. I was reading Peanuts at age 4. In fact it's one of the first things I can remember reading.

I am not going to watch this. It will lack any subtlety or quirkiness. It kind of depresses me.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-03-20

It's okay, it will make some money and then be completely forgotten within a year or so.

Aubrey McFate - 2014-04-13

Since everything that can be said has basically been said...this trailer made me realize my complete and utter hatred for 2001 parodies. So fucking sick of them in every way.

5 stars for potential cash-in evil.
