It almost makes me weep when I think about how amazingly cool the MT-32 was to have. I never had the money for one, of course, but I have a soft spot in my heart for it still. I have the MP3s for some of my favorite games too, which is nerdy in a really specific and embarrassing sort of way.

I got one for a couple years ago but I still haven't really found a niche for it.

One area in which PC technology has actually regressed over the years is sound. Aureal's A3D simulated surround sound technology was the shit, but the scumfucks at Creative Labs sued them for bogus patent infringement. Aureal won the suit, but went bankrupt from it and Creative scooped up their assets in bankruptcy court. The final "fuck you" was Creative deciding not to support A3D and sitting on it to die.

And that is why today's PC sound is still inferior to the technology of 15 years ago, so Creative can push their shitty EAX standard.

EAX is still around? It must be 17 years ago that I learned how to use it (when DirectX was new-ish). With the Sound Blaster Live card. As far as I could tell, all you were really doing was adding some reverb (simulate different sizes of rooms) and possibly a low-pass filter (for muffled/underwater effects). It was done in hardware DSP which was good. The CPU back then would have struggled.

3D effects with headphones never worked for me, but I liked having surround sound with speakers around the room. Thief was a good game for that.

Sounds about right. Maybe china's anti-patent stance has one pro to balance out the cons of being able to rip people off - it also means a good idea cannot be killed forever.

God I so wanted one of these way back in the golden era of PC gaming but hey were way out of my price range so I settled for a Sound Blaster instead.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-03-21

me too. Sigh.

Ouch, OZ. I don't even recognize that brand. I'm guessing the advertised in the back of Computer Gaming World in a small black and white ad.

Right next to the ads for porn CD-ROMs.
