Bitcoins are far superior because the government can't take them away or something.

Bitcoins are far inferior to Beenz; the web's currency.

I only use Flooz.

misterbuns - 2014-03-24

If only funny or die was paying attention.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-24

Side note: is there an actual believable VHS emulation filter out there now or do people who make stuff like this jsut dub it to VHS and capture it back to DV? I've been seeing a lot more plausible VHS-look videos in the last year or so.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-03-24

For the same reasons you don't port digital audio to a wax cylinder to make it sound old-timey.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-24

Some people do. Massive Attack used to record live instruments, have them cut to dub plates and then sample them to get a vinyl sound, for one.

Anyway, that's not actually relevant to my question (is there actually a VHS-look filter that's believable finally? Magic Bullet didn't come close last time I checked it out and I don't know if it does VHS at all).

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-03-24

And They Might Be Giants recorded a song at the Edison Laboratory. Most people don't have TMBG or Massive Attack's resources. Or access to VHS, since they stopped making the machines around 2000.

As for the VHS filters, no, there doesn't appear to be any industry standard "make your video look like VHS" beyond screwing with the settings rapidly, setting the saturation levels to mimic old tapes, etc. I imagine the dropouts and so forth have to be done by hand or layered in from another source (say, a tape recording a single chromakey color that has loads of artifacts on it through damaging the tape).

misterbuns - 2014-03-24

best way is to just get a VCR.

gravelstudios - 2014-03-27

According to Wikipedia, Every episode of Check it Out with Dr. Steve Brule is recorded onto a VHS tape while they shake and hit the VCR to create interference.

Old_Zircon - 2014-04-13

OH I've got VCRs, I just hate to have to transfer stuff from the laptop I use for graphics (doesn't have firewire) over to the server I use for audio so I can send it out to VHS via an old Sony Digital8 camcorder and then dub it back from VHS to Digital8, dump that to the hard drive as DV (something like 20 gigs/hr) and then transfer it back. Because I'm too broke/not involved in video enough to buy a proper DV i/o device.

Incidentally, this is the #2 DuckDuckGo hit for "vhs emulation filter." The first hit is a Youtube clip of really unconvincing VHS emulation with Magic Bullet, which pretty much seals the deal for me. Now I've just got to find my little stash of blank hi8 tapes.

(Oh, and anyone who has access to a thrift shop or garbage dump has access to tons of VCRs, unless you need S-VHS - which I'd like to upgrade to sometime, since it's actually great for processing audio).

Old_Zircon - 2014-04-13

Gravelstudios, that's great and not too surprising.

Old_Zircon - 2014-04-13

Fuck it, I just went for it and it looks great. I had no idea that would happen if you shook the VCR while you were recording!

duck&cover - 2014-03-24

Love the voder voice and the 56k modem sound. So many memories.

oddeye - 2014-03-24

Sounds more like a 28.8k you heathen

Old_Zircon - 2014-04-13

It's a vocoder, not a voder. YOU HEATHEN.
