Police Quest 1 makes this look like a Michael Bay movie by comparison - doing anything with your gun (besides adjusting your sights at the shooting range) before the very end of the game would be instant game over. I'm pretty sure you didn't even fire your gun. I guess the sequels needed a bit more action to sell.

I don't remember Police Quest letting you use the gun until the very end either.

In fact, I don't remember using the gun at all in 2 (or whatever the one with your wife in a coma). At the end, someone else shoots the villain.
