Future Islands opened for a band I was playing with back in 2009 or something for our CD release show. They took forever getting their shit set up but I was sitting there having a beer and wishing I was in Geritt and Sam's band.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

that is fucking awesome.

infinite zest - 2014-04-04

Wye Oak also opened for us that night. At least in Portland bus service stops at around 1AM but the venue stays open until closing time, so they were more-or-less the headliners, and to be honest way better than us (the band I was in still exists, just in Portland Maine of all things).

About 2 years ago one of my housemates was playing "Give us the Wind" and I seriously thought it was Current 93 and then it was like "oh yeah I know these guys, we drank beer on the train bridge." By this point I had kind of forgotten about Future Islands, but that song was just stuck in my head. A bike ride to work in the rain becomes a Nordic Adventure. I wonder if others feel that way.. like Sam is wearing a bear skin coat atop a fjord and not just a totally normal guy, like the guy you see at the office lunch room who's microwaving the most delicious smelling food, and you ask him where he got it at and he says he made it at home and you don't see him again for 4 months.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-04

He reminds me of Graham Norton on Father Ted.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-04

Ha! This guy/act is like a gelded version of Tom Jones. Have you all lost the will to live?

EvilHomer - 2014-04-04

I was thinking Tom Jones re-imagined by aging shoegazers.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

Ok Old McCrankyperson

EvilHomer - 2014-04-04

Come now, Chairs, no need for that. Some people *like* Tom Jones, and if you are one them, that's entirely up to you! But things are the way they are, and you really can't fault people for telling it like it is.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

nah that's not my point... you'd get this band more if you heard the rest of this album. They're essentially a 3 piece and if you don't like sweet poppy new wave you won't appreciate it. the interplay between the band and the front man is a really good example of a really fucking good frontman. Also, u guys sux. I like tom jones too, but he's clearly got a lot more influences than that (henry rollins is from the dc area too)

infinite zest - 2014-04-04

I don't really watch Letterman, but the last time was to catch a friend of mine's band and his reaction was just kind of like "ok.. stay tuned for Late Late Show.." here Letterman's generally enthusiastic and I can see why. He adored Warren Zevon and I notice a lot of Zevon in the presentation, vocally and physically. I went out and bought Singles just now and every song on it is worth it. Until the new Woods or Afghan Whigs album drops, it's my favorite of the year, even more than The War on Drugs or Death Vessel. This is a great song but it's far from my favorite track on the album (Sun in the Morning is kind of perfect.)

infinite zest - 2014-04-04

I have to work their show tomorrow.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-04

The notable difference being Tom had the ladies throwing their panties at him and a wall of 70's studio musician brass. These guys? Not so much. Now get the hell off my lawn!

EvilHomer - 2014-04-04

OK, fine. So Graham Norton shoegazing Tom Jones, with a dab of Rollinsesque showmanship- but just a dab! Not enough to frighten the children!

Anyway, they sound alright I guess, and I do like the singer guy's Cookie Waits breakdowns (does he do that often?), but best of the YEAR? Huh. They're gonna have to really step up their game if they hope to compete with "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck".

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-04

The Stay Puff Marshmallow Rollins.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

i will actually fight you, old man

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

wtf are you even talking about with ladies panties anyway, this guy turned me gay for him. you're fighting the wrong battle you nirib

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

btw, let's get them all out. Rollins gollum peter gabriel all russel crowe morrissey gordon ramsey fred phelps gumby frankenstein arnold palmer burn fillips, rip torn

EvilHomer - 2014-04-04

I don't see the Ramsey, but Gollum is pretty good!

infinite zest - 2014-04-04

I'll be helping load in their shit tomorrow, I'm totally gonna quote this thread.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-05

Do they have a good sense of humor? James Blunt totally won me over with his off-stage manner, and these guys sound only slightly lamer than he does.

I'd really like to like these guys.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-05

Also, you should ask them if they'd be willing to do some easy listening covers of Henry Rollins.

Adham Nu'man - 2014-04-05

I usually don't like "sweet poppy new wave" and I do like Tom Jones and I thought this was fucking great.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-05

It suddenly struck me how much the whole act seems like a male version of Leoncie. As so...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj9FjFDSHjQ

EvilHomer - 2014-04-05

Ew. Don't make fun of Leoncie.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-05

you should have started with the leoncie reference cause it was the first thing i thought of after seeing this, I am therefore five starring my own submission

erratic - 2014-04-04

ha! I promise this is the one and only time in my life I have ever been able to claim "I was into them before they were cool", but I went to college with these guys back when they were a joke band called Art Lord and the Self Portraits. I went to almost every house party they played.

That guy - 2014-04-04

This is their breakout performance, huh?

What were they breaking out of, a damp paper bag?

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

what did it feel like when your damp dick re entered your moms puss of which your head come out of?

snothouse - 2014-04-04

That was pretty funny.

That guy - 2014-04-04

Yeah, I have no comeback for that.

infinite zest - 2014-04-04

I hate to ask this, but did you listen to the song or just watch the video?

That guy - 2014-04-04

I liked the weirdness but that's about it. I didn't like the song itself.

Scrimmjob - 2014-04-04

I think this is pretty meh, I don't hate it, but I wouldn't listen to it on my free time... again.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

these guys are super fun and try to be a fun band and apparently people HATE that shit. I wonder what the people who HATE this shit are like... Miserable and making others miserable by proxy?

EvilHomer - 2014-04-04

Now you see what I've been going through with all the cynical meanies who hate ponies.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-04

no. you are wrong. people have been hating on subgenres for year and years. the success of this balding man has nothing to do with your weird fucking ponies.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-05

Ah yes, we've all been victim to that "new band passion" that others just might not share...

But to be fair, I can see why people are liking this. The frontman's antics and emoting are fun and he seems sincere. Is this a subgenre? If so, what? I can't quite put a finger on it. It's not new wave, that's for sure. It's sort of like an 80's revival act with all the jagged edges sanded off.

chairsforcheap - 2014-04-05

everything is a subgenre. it just doesn't matter. this is probably considered math punk sleepercore

Adham Nu'man - 2014-04-04

Never heard of them before and I'm a bitter old fuck who pays little attention to what is released nowadays (cause I got bored about 5 years ago) and I thought this was really awesome.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-05

Ponies are fun and you're trying to make me miserable by proxy.

But that's OK. I forgive you.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-05
