Arg durian. Terrible stuff. I can remember the smell distinctly, like something rotten. The only time I ate it in Malaysia was on a dare from my Chinese driver/translator. I ate hot chili tofu and all kinds of wild stuff when I was there because of that guy. We got along pretty well.
They have signs in most of the hotels that have the NO SMOKING sign accompanied by a NO DURIAN sign. The smell is impossible to get rid of.
Rancid, terrible, stuff. 5 for vicarious nausea.

SolRo - 2014-04-12 Is it worth trying the ones imported by Asian markets in the US? they all seem to have been frozen and thawed and I'm not sure what effect that would have on the fruit(?).

Simian Pride - 2014-04-12 Not sure, I've bought all my durians in Norway, and I don't know if those are transported here frozen or not. Nevertheless, I just ate some thawed duran from my freezer which were quite nice, even though it's been frozen since July.

Can't speak for the frozen stuff, but if you want to try it, and you should try it, you owe yourself new experiences, I suggest:
- Go with the good stuff, D24 is a well known brand that is not too harsh, some of the stranger varieties are a bit much.
- Start small, don't eat the entire fruit! that stuff is a calorie bomb and can make you sick, especially when mixing with booze.
- Quality Durian Ice Cream, Durian puffs, or pudding are a good way to easy into this fruit.
- I like durian candy, and McDonalds durian McFlurry ain't bad, but the taste is very artificial and far from the real thing, the richness of the flavor is lost.
