Pottery!

nonplusplus - 2014-04-08

The pencil is Patrick Swayze; the electromagnetism is Demi Moore.

Riskbreaker - 2014-04-05

FUCKING COPPER!

oddeye - 2014-04-05

Copper is just a poormans gold.

Bort - 2014-04-05

Those other three chunks of aluminum will do their jobs without protesting now.

Billy the Poet - 2014-04-05

INTO THE AGONY BOOTH WITH YOU!

animegurl1000 - 2014-04-06

Laying the flattened bit of molten aluminum next to the other cubes at the end added a nice touch.

oddeye - 2014-04-05

Skip to 1:50 or so to get straight to molten goodness then probably about 2:40 to give yourself enough lead-up time for the awesome finish.

Would this take more or less energy than simply passing a current through the aluminium (guessing possibly even) or through conventional means (guessing a lot more) ?

Bort - 2014-04-05

Aluminum is a pretty good conductor of electricity, not quite as good as copper but same ballpark. I don't see the copper coil showing much evidence of heating up, which makes me guess the aluminum wouldn't either.

Tungsten is a pretty good conductor as well; but what makes a tungsten light bulb work is that it's a narrow filament trying to conduct way too much electricity.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2014-04-06

The copper coil is inducing a very strong electromagnetic current through the Aluminum. The induction is causing the Aluminum to heat up.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-06

Don't you all find it interesting that the phase of the last turn on the induction coil has been inverted? WELL, DON"T YOU????

RedRust - 2014-04-06

And this is why it was important to take high school Physics -- to understand what the heck is going on here.

gravelstudios - 2014-04-06

Now I'm sad, because my high school physics class didn't go anywhere near this kind of thing :-(

Bort - 2015-12-15

OW - you seem to want someone to bite (if years later), so this is my guess. If the coil were going in just one direction, the entirety of the magnetic field would be pointing in one direction. The fact that the coil loops around and goes the other way means that the magnetic fields produced by the windings cancel each other out pretty effectively, though not perfectly -- the are regions where one winding or the other is producing a stronger magnetic field. This, in conjunction with the alternating current that is no doubt running through the copper coil, means that the aluminum is getting constantly jerked around with ever-changing magnetic fields that stress its crystal structure.

oddeye - 2015-12-15

YOUR crystal structure is about to get constantly jerked around, poindexter!

Old_Zircon - 2014-04-06

"Twirling twirling twirling towards freedom" tag please.

The Mothership - 2014-04-19

seconded.

Koda Maja - 2014-04-06

plop

Jeriko-1 - 2014-04-06

I guess under no circumstances should one insert their penis into those coils.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-06

You would be very disappointed. Nothing would happen.

Koda Maja - 2014-04-06

Just don't do it while the molten aluminum is in there.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2014-04-06

Your penis would probably be fine as it's not electrically conductive.

oddeye - 2014-04-06

Speak for yourself Harriet.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-04-06

OTOH A chrome strap-on would make you light up like a Christmas tree.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-04-06

Seems like an awfully small opening for that.

oddeye - 2014-04-06

Speak for yourself Binro.

Louis Armstrong - 2014-04-06

I believe he is.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-07

Anyone remember the POERed page where the guy implanted lots of ball bearings, lights, and other objects into his penis? It weighed several pounds and was horribly infected. Anyone? I thought I had wiped it from my memory, but this thread brought it right back.

That guy - 2015-12-16

Not only do I not remember that, I'm not getting a mental image. I'm just whistling right on by.
