Dangit! They got around to doing my idea before I did.. well not exactly.. there's a bunch of cover bands (mostly Grateful Dead and Phish are the popular ones, but it gets really specific in the Midwest like The Replacements, and Portland's own Gimme an X, which at this point sounds better than regular X..)

Anyway mine was a little sketch about an Archers of Loaf cover band called The Floating Friends. :)

EvilHomer - 2014-04-07

You could still do your sketches. Mine would be a BABYMETAL cover band called GRAMPYMETAL, composed entirely of old men in drag.

I wonder if JHMF would be up for an acting gig...?

Also, Blind Accordion, a Weird Al style power metal cover band, oPet, an Opeth cover band featuring a dog on vocals, and the Scumponies of Equestria, an MLP-themed GWAR tribute.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-07

Or, no, should they be in drag? Maybe it would be better to invent a new style for GRAMPYMETAL, like... gothshota? A goth/visual-Kei take on old fashioned "boy" clothes, like the Fauntleroy suit? That'd probably look really cool on a fat old dude like Mr Holmes!

I would break my Fugazi-pricing rules to see a MLP Gwar fusion tribute band. Back in Madison a guy I worked with was in a band called Beatallica.. you can probably guess where that's going.. the weird thing is that it worked (Abbey Load is a good album to start with.)

I love the idea of fusion bands.. it's bands the just cover The Dead or Phish or Floyd that always get to me. From what I can ascertain they sound pretty much exactly like the source material. I guess it gives Deadheads a live experience some of them were too young to see, and as far as I know Phish were (are?) on hiatus.

What's weird is cover bands are often better, especially live, than the originals. The Replacements are one of my favorite bands, and although I never saw them live, they were pretty famous for fucking up their songs, due to themselves being fucked up. I'm sure a Mats cover band has those songs memorized more than I do.

Being in a Weezer cover band would be incredibly depressing. Imagine having to sing those dumb Rivers lyrics every damned show.

On the other hand it's easy to play the part by just mailing in every performance and appearing kinda vaguely bored at all times.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2014-04-07

Yeah. These guys always struck me as a band that didn't much care about music. I know that that doesn't make sense, but can't spot any of their influences, other than wearing glasses and being kinda nerdy. The music itself could probably be written by a computer with a basic knowledge of chord structure.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-07

I think they care about their music, they're just not very good musicians. Weezer's always struck me as a very "genuine" rock band, with a few neat ideas, but who've never really taken the time or effort to master technical things, like how to play guitar, or, how to write songs with more than three chords.

They're the musical equivalent of Charles Schulz.

You just have to use the right amount of inane rhymes as thought up by an annoyingly precocious grade-schooler who is not even half as clever as he thinks he is.

badideasinaction - 2014-04-07

I don't blame them in the least - they're in the gilded cage where they can go through the motions every year or so and make good money doing it. The closest they came to rocking the boat was Pinkerton, that flopped at the time so they know what they need to do to keep earning money.

It's kinda the band version of the science fiction convention circuit - play along and you get paid. Pretty reasonable way to keep making money.

I loved it.

infinite zest - 2014-04-07

I watched the second one too, which isn't quite as good.. kind of reminds me of early Tenacious D, but with Weezer. Ain't nothin' wrong with that. I also like how James Murphy keeps getting name dropped and they're just oblivious, like they've been living in a pre-LCD Soundsystem universe.

For the record, I'd take Blue Album/Pinkerton (even Green Album) weezer over James Murphy any day of the week!

These people are too white for me.
