This movie and the comic (links in my reply to baleen) it's based on take place in a universe in which the Middle Ages never happened. As a result, Christianity isn't huge. The main character, John F. Kennedy, while still president, is a bisexual polygamous pagan. It's heavily implied in the story that takes place on the moon that he is the reincarnation of our own Kennedy. This may be the case of the other historical figures who coexist with the alternate Kennedy (and in the same time period as him), such as, if I recall correctly, Cleopatra and Princess Diana.
