Don't know if it's specifically geocentricism, sounds more like they're beating on the 'universe was made for us, we're so special, dude what if like god only made life on earth, far out man' dead horse again.

misterbuns - 2014-04-07

this was financed by a guy who runs a website called http://galileowaswrong.com/

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-04-07

It's geocentrism.

Metafilter linked to an article about this where Rick DeLano (login name) defended this movie to the hilt with all kinds of cray-cray:

SolRo - 2014-04-07

Guess the trailer is a false flag

exy - 2014-04-08

There was the bit about how the CMBR suggests we're centered in the universe.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-04-08

False flag? You mean they didn't come out and use the g-word?

1:16 - "You can go on some websites about NASA and see they've been taking down stuff that might hint to a geocentric universe."

Then they followed it up with crap about the Earth being "special" and so on and so forth.

Also, Lawrence Krauss, a physicist who shows up in this thing, said it was about geocentrism, that he'd been quote-mined, and to ignore the film:

Looks like even the narrator is disowning it:

baleen - 2014-04-08

Everybody involved that isn't a bearded creationist is disowning it.

This is interesting because it dips into the limitations of fair use. Is it acceptable to exploit a notion from an authority on a subject to reinforce an idea, even if that idea is frail or faulty? Isn't that what we do all the time to some degree?

When you look at how the Discovery Institute, Fred Singer's network of climate change deniers, Alternet and Infowars all operate, they're constantly doing this to some degree. Once it's been delivered to the chaos of the internet, it gets isolated in an echo chamber where any proper analysis of the sources is almost impossible. It's really frustrating and really scary.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2014-04-07

Ironically, these five stars also revolve around the Earth.

misterbuns - 2014-04-08

:D

for you!

"I hope Kate Mulgrew narrates the whole film. If that's the case, I will watch it and pretend Psycho Janeway is attempting to alter history again."

Billy the Poet - 2014-04-08

This might explain how Janeway got her spaceship so lost.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-08

Gravity is dumb, let's pretend it doesn't work because... you know... god or something.

misterbuns - 2014-04-08

Really looking forward to the libel lawsuit from Michio Kaku's lawyers on this one.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2014-04-08

Weak anthropic principle? Okay. Strong anthropic principle? Well, maybe. Geocentrism? Are you kidding me?

Hooker - 2014-04-08

I love how they always pair claims nobody would disagree with along side claims that are moronic. Like them protesting that the Earth is vastly different and/or more interesting than anywhere else in the universe. What scientist of any discipline would disagree with that?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-04-08

Quite a few would, I suspect, without attaching "that we know of and can visit first-hand" on the end of the statement.

SolRo - 2014-04-08

Life is the only interesting part about earth. Other planets have methane rain, or molten metal rain, or metalized hydrogen cores, or 60 mile deep oceans, or a million other awesome things.

Earth is lukewarm vanilla by galactic standards.

oddeye - 2014-04-08

I wouldn't say life is the ONLY thing remarkable about the Earth. For example, did you know that our planet is the only one called Earth in the entire known universe? No?
The earth also has a really nice blue sky, very nice tone on that one; voted best sky observable by the naked eye 8 years in a row now, beat that Titan!

oddeye - 2014-04-08

Why does the earth being the center of the universe matter so much to these people? Why not pick something that would have a direct impact on peoples life like chemtrails and shit.

spikestoyiu - 2014-04-08

I think it's important from a religious perspective. So this somehow proves that their religion is right.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-04-08

It's pretty much exactly like the people who believe they're being gangstalked. They HAVE to believe they're important, otherwise they have to deal with a lot of uncomfortable questions about their lives.

If Earth isn't the center of everything, then one has to wonder about any all-powerful deities and why they picked an apparent galactic backwater for the most important creation in the universe. If one possesses such childish arrogance, that is.

StanleyPain - 2014-04-08

The makers of this are radical Catholic nutbags who deny the Holocaust as well. They've been on skeptic radars for awhile now what with their "Galileo was wrong" website, but this achieves new levels of batshit.

The Great Hippo - 2014-04-08

I'd be very curious how the people behind this documentary think the Mars probe succeeded. If the model we use for the galaxy is completely wrong, the mathematics behind the probe launch should never have worked.

Then again, they probably think the Mars probe -- and most of the NASA programs -- never actually happened, and are part of a conspiracy.

StanleyPain - 2014-04-08

The fact that general relativity actually works is a huge obstacle for shitheads that want to rewrite physics because GOD AND THE BIBLE. The speed of light is another one as well, to which the weird religious response is now something called "c-decay" which proposes that the speed of light was much faster in the past because of a gravitational anomaly surrounding the solar system created by god or some shit to make it APPEAR as though the light is coming from billions of light years away or something...it makes my head hurt trying to understand it.

SolRo - 2014-04-08

What's their solution for the speed of light being broken by stars having to rotate around the earth?

Or if the earth still rotates, how do all the stars and galaxies stay in orbit around a gravitationally insignificant object?

oddeye - 2014-04-08

For fundamentalists, the solution to all of these problems and more is ultimately "cause god(s)". I honestly don't know why they bother to respond to anything illusion shattering, scientific or not, with these horseshit, half-assed "alternative theories." Just deny it outright or state that your higher power made it appear that way, you dopey gets.

SolRo - 2014-04-09

yeah I know that, but its fun to see what the retards come up with to preach to the disciples.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-04-09

It'd be more fun if the disciples realized it was bullshit and not an actual explanation. I used to work in an office with a Baptist who had a dozen explanations as to where the water for Noah's flood came from and where it went, none of which could possibly be true without making the planet uninhabitable in the first place.

It also begged the question of "If God made this impossible water stuff possible, why bother with the flood in the first place? Why not just kill everyone except Noah and his family in one cosmic murder spree?"

oddeye - 2014-04-09

It's symbolic of how God wanted to kill the man-angel half breeds with an ocean of love, ontop of which his chosen holy folk, man and beast alike, will commit godly incest to repopulate the world.
It was done this way to inspire mankind into choosing good over evil, which he allowed man to commit in the first place, and to give man a fresh start; like he did after Sodom and Gomorrah, then again with the flood, one more time with Jesus and once again in the future after the rapture. Also to endorse cousin fucking for the 500th time cause guys, we really aren't getting the message on incest here, it's ordained for fucks sake.

Duhhh.

oddeye - 2014-04-09

Also God works in mysterious ways, so suck that down with a pint of rancid hyena jizz, unbelievers.

StanleyPain - 2014-04-18

For those curious, this is something generally referred to in anti-apologist circles as "Last Thursdayism" which is basically that if all of things creationists are proposing are true, then it would appear that God went through a lot of trouble to make the universe appear old when it actually isn't. The universe could have been created "Last Thursday" and our entire lives and history could have occurred in less than a week by God's divine will or whatever, but it would never seem this way to us.

This is very odd. Not that apologists care, mind you.
