I'm not sure if she's released any of the Shining stuff, but Carlos did put out her own version of the Clockwork Orange soundtrack that has most of the alternate versions and outtakes that never made into the movie and makes a great companion to the "official" Warner Bros. disc.

Country Lane is weird..it sounds like something straight out of Tron.

Funny how it still sounds like it was recorded yesterday. For the record, she was still Walter when she did Clockwork Orange

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-12

But Walter was always Wendy at her being, so it's correct to retroactively change the authorship.

Oh Jesus Christ- JBF's sensitivity was always Wendy at her being, too.

Windows makes an excellent butt warmer.

That a horrible flesh bag animates behind her when she plays her theramin gizmo earns this 1,000,000 stars.

I once had a rock band called The JS Bach Experience. We broke up around 1999, but a couple of years later a friend sent me an email asking me what I did to hurt Wendy Carlos. It pointed me toward a page on her website where the band was listed on a short-list of people who have hurt her... we were listed as "probably is just generally insensitive/sexually insecure", to be precise.

It was pretty surprising, given that our band had no interaction with her. It's possible that we quoted a journalist's review of our band in which the journalist made some kind of analogy between Switch-On Bach and what our band did, but beyond that we had nothing to do with her.

I sent an email to her through her website and received an email back about 24 hours later. It was from her assistant who said something like, "Hello, I showed your email to Wendy and she couldn't remember why she put you on the short-list. I'm sure you did something like claim to know the REAL story about what REALLY happened. She agreed that we would remove your band from the list."

No explanation. No apology. I had no fucking clue what they were talking about.

My first memories of music are listening to Switch-On Bach on vinyl. Never meet your heroes. Never. Don't even do anything that might have the slightest chance of getting their attention. Heroes are horrible, horrible people.

Maybe she was having a bad day. I don't think some anonymous interactions warrant you judging her personality. She's obviously really eccentric, as many musical geniuses are, so I think you should just give her a free pass on a weird email and short listing.

A starworthy story, Elf. Watch your fingers, Anna Madrigal has TEETH!

heads up, Wendy Carlos wants to fight you

I like this story

She used to be a regular on rec.music.electronic or whatever the hell newsgroup it was. Always seemed pretty nice and open to questions, but she had a bit of a short temper with people who kept bugging her about the sex change thing and wanting tons of answers about working with Kubrick. I never had any dealings with her, personally, apart from her answering some minor question about Tron. I did get the feeling, though, that whoever her "assistant" was, it was the kind of person who took a lot of liberties to act on Carlos' behalf about various things.
