Supply side Jesus demands equal time!

sasazuka - 2014-04-13

The statue is by Ontario artist Timothy Schmalz.

http://www.sculpturebytps.com/

Schmalz also did a statue of a cloaked homeless guy with his hand out and you look down at the face and, surprise, it's Jesus (well, the Italian renaissance version of Jesus that probably doesn't look like the historical man but whatever) that's outside St. Andrews United Church on Wellington St. in Ottawa:

Wow, those are really good! It's nice that the Pope likes his work. I imagine the Pope would be the supreme art-bouncer for Catholic artists; if he says you're cool, you're in!

Adham Nu'man - 2014-04-14

What about Jesus playing poker?

sasazuka - 2014-04-14

Minor correction, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church not St. Andrew's United Church. If it's a St. Andrew's, it's almost always Presbyterian, St. Andrew being the Patron Saint of Scotland and all.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-15

St. Andrew's is an Episcopalian boarding school I know of. And, St. Andrew's is also an Episcopalian church in my home town. I haven't heard of any Presbyterian churches called St. Andrew's before.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

Why can't Jesus be a saviour that protects AND a hobo that serves as a reminder of his "whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do to me."

This video will hopefully spark a lot of debate, which is great, but will ultimately result in the standard fundamentalists on all sides sticking to their guns, atheists included.

Semi-related note: Potholer54 is pretty awesome cause he doesn't bang on about the tired ass spaghetti monster every 5 mins.

Hugo Gorilla - 2014-04-13

I live just north of Davidson. There really isn't much a controversy about the statue as much as the lady that called the cops when she saw it. And she's upset how she's being portrayed in the media. She started a website.

PegLegPete - 2014-04-13

What a nutcase.

"The figure is located in a poorly lit area and didn't actually look like a homeless person, rather like someone lying in wait to mug an innocent victim. I have worked with the homeless and know their demeanor. This "figure" didn't match the MO. It was too organized and uniform appearing more like someone posing as a homeless person, sinister."

"Where do YOU believe Christ is? The Bible tells us He is in Heaven, doing the Father's work."

I see them straws she be graspin' at.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-13

Art achieved. I would be honored to be that artist after reading that silly garbage.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-14

If religious art has to depict Jesus RIGHT NOW, then am I to understand that she is also offended by statues of Jesus on the cross?

TeenerTot - 2014-04-14

From her home page:
'One question no one has asked is, why did the church spend thousands of dollars on art if they are so concerned for the needs of others?'

Cena_mark - 2014-04-14

That's hilarious. She looked like such a asshole, not so much for her opposition to the statue, but that she would call the cops on a someone just for looking homeless and sleeping on a bench.

M-DEEM - 2014-04-13

Hahah! Call the cops there's a man sleeping on a park bench endangering the whole neighborhood!

1:24.
"It just gives me an overwhelming sense of peace and comfort."

Uh, why?

The Mothership - 2014-04-13

Jesus wept.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

Jesus slept.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

(on a park bench)

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-13

:D

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-13

JESUS IS NOT A VAGRANT. He only, you know, moved from place to place with a group of friends getting kicked out of here and there and spending a bunch of time being hungry in the wilderness.

That guy - 2014-04-15

Jesus is not helpless.
That's why I worship him and not some bum.

Cause he's not helpless.

He also died for our sins for some reason that his dad made necessary so he could fix it.

infinite zest - 2014-04-13

I work at an Episcopal church doing clerical work and grant writing and stuff, and I help organize their food pantry too, serving usually 600+ homeless individuals in a two hour period. I know everyone voted down the "prank" video where they turn a soup kitchen into a five star restaurant, but that five star restaurant is exactly how our volunteers treat ours'.

As such, the guests are beyond respectful. Besides one fight, I can't recall an incident that would scream "EEEEK RUN AWAY" which is the stigma often associated with the homeless. Speaking of "stigma," I don't really have to elaborate on this, do I?

Anyway, fuck this bitch.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-14

You sound like a pretty cool guy Mr. Zest. I do some work with the rescue shelter here too, but thanks to Reagan and de-institutionalization, a lot of people that need long-term mental health and rehab aren't getting it. And it has turned hostile on several occasions. It's not directed toward the staff. It's always crazy white lady on crazy white lady around here it seems, but it gives the place a weird atmosphere.
I enjoy going there though. I like talking to the ancient hippies about how great LSD was in the 60s, and stuff like that.

RockBolt - 2014-04-13

I'm pretty sure it goes, "That which you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me... unless you suspect they are just lazy panhandlers, in that case fuck 'em"

RockBolt - 2014-04-13

Also: "she was concerned for the safety... of the neighborhood"

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-14

Because a man comatose on a bench is a huge safety hazard.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-14

You know how dangerous comatose homeless men are. Just when they seem most helpless, ZAFFO, that's when they get you and your police dog with their knives!

Standard procedure in these cases is to shoot the hobo dead, so really, this woman showed remarkable restraint and compassion.

Cena_mark - 2014-04-14

Shooting this hobo could result in injuries from ricochet.

oddeye - 2014-04-14

I'd sleep on a bench too if the last time I slept in the countryside 6 cops armed with assault rifles shot me to death.

themilkshark - 2014-04-14

Policeman, please come clean up this ragamuffin on the sidewalk. My child might step in it.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-04-18

That's a very effective piece of art and a very defective critic.

Wombles - 2016-03-19

Concerned - "for the safety of the neighborhood".

That said, I like imagine a homeless guy looking for a bench and thinking "shit, that one's always taken!"
