I'm really good friends with Rap Girl (the gal with the pink slippers) and Boy Funk. To be honest it's not really my thing, but they're awesome individuals and have a pretty big following in the LGBTQ rap community in Portland.

So Mr Funk, is he really in it "for the fame"? I would hope he was in it for the music, or at least for the money. "Fame" seems like a rather short-sighted and immature goal, as it neither enriches one's art, nor provides for one's family.

I mean, is seeking attention for it's own sake REALLY something we should be promoting in music for young people? We should not be telling them that self-worth is dependent upon how many strangers adore and envy you from afar. Please relay my concerns to Mr Funk, and ask him if he could not perhaps be so good as to sing positive lyrics in the future.

Sorry for the double-reply. It's a niche market.. I love them but I doubt if they'll be the new Macklemore, and don't think they even want to. Transgendered hip hop is kind of a thing here. It might sound weird, but hey we're on a site discussing Insane Clown Posse and Babymetal :)

Music and art in general exists at its core to achieve a community presence.. I think Jay Z said it best about his time as a trapper: "Hov did that so hopefully you don't have to go through that." True, this song doesn't say "achieve your dreams, you can do it Shuya!" but neither does most music, especially the music on POE or 73q.

I know I'm a bit biased, and like I said their music's not really my thing, but i help them with sound for events they curate like Blowpony. These things create a sense of community in a subculture that's often dismissed by society as strange or even freakish. So instead of staying home, bears, transgenders, furries, bronies, ecci cosplayees and so many more all congregate for these events. Pretty beautiful. So that's what they're doing. If fame knocks that'd be great, but really they do what they do so everyone has a home.

Actually, now that I think about it, I would probably pay good money to see these people do a cover of Rarity's fame ballad, "Becoming Popular (The Pony Everypony Should Know)".

I'm not even kidding about that! If Ms Rap or Mr Funk are at all open to ponies, you should suggest it; I think the song could really suit their style, and of course, it'd be bound to generate buzz for them.

heh.. I wish Jay Z was a fur trapper.. trapping is slang for drug dealing.. I've been listening to too much 666 mafia I guess. I can pass that idea forward. I mentioned it months ago, but I found out what a bronie was from working one of their shows. It was just a shirt that said "keep calm and bronie on" and I was like "what's that?" as I had heard the word tossed around on Poe.

I keep wondering how the Portlandia writers come up with all their material and then I hear stories of Portland and am all like "oh yeah".

"Scene kid" usually means the type of person that is really personally invested in the local music scene either as a patron or performer. They are usually "fashion forward" so they stand out by dressing and styling themselves in a trendy, outlandish way. Depending on music taste they vary between grungy punks, nerdy emos, ravers, matrix goths, chuck taylor hipsters or hip hop thugs.

More specifically I think the term refers to the teenage fans of abominations like Blood on the Dance Floor, Brokencyde, Breathe Caroline, 3OH3, etc. etc. etc. Think too much neon, terrible hair dye, lyrics written by fifteen year olds who want to seem cool and jaded, excessive internet use, hip hop argot used by suburban white kids, implied pedophilia, terrible synthesizers. All in all, a reason to declare rock dead and give up your faith in the next generation. This sort of stuff has been around long enough now that a bunch of the people involved can't be called "kids" anymore.

i've seen two distinct usages of scene kid. The first is what milkshark outlined, basically someone whose into music / partying / nightlife / whatever. The other group are broey suburban emo kids from California who will be into emo stuff like feathered black hair, sleeves of tattoos and drugs, but also bro stuff like ufc, working out, and misogyny. Eg: Hunter Moore

Honestly, Homer, with the group that I mentioned, being incredibly ahistorical about pop music is kind of par for the course, so that more or less gives them license to pretend that nobody's done something like what they're doing before. Also, they're sixteen, or were when they called themselves scene kids, and that helps, too.

Also, some aging scene kids tend to act like nothing else has past their scene, nothing important at least.

Some others, in my experience, will as they age start to come off as an unpleasant mix of some of the several musical and fashion trends that they've ended up floating in the oily wake of over the years, like some sort of unsavory blend of accreted mod/emo/screamo/preppy/punk/post punk/post post punk/etc. and what have you.

Some of the chubby girl's tats looked sort of well done, though, and that's something.

So true. I think what really amazes me is this: often the thinking around these things is that all the low hanging fruit has been picked ( hehe ) so how do you shock or transgress?

The answer of course is in this website. Your average ChrisChan clip makes my hair stand on end. These guys? Snooze - o - rama ! I mean, this shtick was kinda played back in the late 70's, you know? Put onions in your pants, you lame old portland queers! It's the style of the times!

I think the most controversial aspect of this is that the song seems to be endorsing committed, lifelong monogamy.
