Real-time X-COM sort of misses the point, doesn't it?

EvilHomer - 2014-04-29

I don't know. I used to think turn-based was the only way to go, but Men of War was an awesome real-time tactics game! As was the older Commandos series! Heck, even grand strategy games, which one would think would have to be turn-based, work fine in real-time (Crusader Kings, Vicky, Europa Universalis). The trick, I think, is having a fully-functional pause feature; as long as you can issue commands while the game is paused, there is nothing inherently "wrong" with having real-time action.

My main complaint, just going off this video, is that it looks like it owes more to the Starcraft school of blob-and-shoot gameplay, rather than the more tactically sophisticated, cover-based gameplay of, say, Company of Heroes. Bringing a blob of randomly moving Space Marines from Point A to Point B, while trying to wrangle their AI through strict real-time micromanagement, does not sound like a fun experience.

Something like, again, Men of War or Commandos done in a sci-fi/ X-Com style might work really, really well! A game that consists of nothing more than those annoying War/Starcraft "No-Base" SP campaign missions, not so much.

I'm also skeptical of the alleged focus on "unique and cooperative multi-player." I am not a fan of multiplayer games, and games designed specifically TO BE multiplayer games usually offer a poor solo experience. I don't want to rank up online, I don't want to get "good sport" points, I don't want to manage clans or socialize with fat kids or put my name up on a leaderboard so everyone can see how much of my life I'm wasting, I just want to turn the lights off, immerse myself in a Martian city, and frag the frak out of some aliens.

This. I don't want a video GAME to become work. I don't want to practice a video game like I'm in a rec basketball league. And I sure as hell don't want to hang out with asshole strangers online; I do enough of that here. Multiplayer only tells me that we were too lazy to program AI.

Myth.

The entire world guzzled down the uninspired drivel that was warcraft II while Myth got left in the dust, despite being the superior game by several orders of magnitude. Beta vs VHS all over again. The stupid people wanted to be able to hit a button and make more units come out of a building.

Nevermind being able to dodge arrows, set the landscape on fire, get killed by flying shrapnel, kick people off cliffs, throw the corpses of dwarves at your enemy and have their backpacks' explosive munitions ignite (based on a random % chance) and take out a clump of melee.

I could go on. And on. And on.

Lego mod, Civil war, Feudal Japan, WW2, vietnam, futuristic weapons, aliens vs colonial marines... the list goes on. And HD Myth, the project I helped create with one other person using all the original 3d assets.

I wear my bitterness like a badge of honor.

Myth looks fun.

Myth was a really great series; the Dwarves are still one of my favorite RT-whatever units, right up there with the Cretan Archers from R:TW and Yuriko the Akira-schoolgirl from Red Alert 3.

Did you really make an HD version of Myth? If so, where can I get it?

Email me - 4723yu@gmail.com

Anybody interested, can also email me. Thats my spam account, sorry for the num-speak.

I use WeTransfer, which sends a link with the download to peoples' email accounts. I dont have dropbox anymore, had to cut that expense, or I would just link you to it from there.

Also it would be cool to play a game or 2, homer, I definitely need testers. The current community is rather small.

Oh and not to be a total dick - Red Solstice looks cool, it reminds me of my favorite part of starcraft - the missions where you only had a small group of units. Youd go into a hive and use firebats and marines to clear out a zerg nest. Very atmospheric, and lots of scripted encounters.
