It's a joke about a hard rock band that hasn't been relevant for nearly a decade. The joke is that all of their songs sound like this (they do).

I never got into this band but I remember this song (for some reason I always thought it was System of a Down, who have actually impressed me many times for a band in a genre I don't really like or listen to.)

This kind of reminds me of the Weird Al parody of Nirvana's "Smalls Like Teen Spirit" but not funny at all.

Kinda unrelated but I've never seen Weird Al but "Smells Like Nirvana" kind of stopped being funny after the suicide. Does he still play it at live shows? Because that's kinda low.

It's actually like a mashup of four or five of their songs. I'm not really a fan of SoaD myself, but I could see why people liked them. They were one of the better "radio" bands when I was a kid, and one of the few actually tolerable numetal acts. Disturbed just plain sucked, but SoaD was OK. And Weird Al addressed the Smells Like Nirvana thing at one point. I don't remember verbatim what he said, but apparently Kurt was really happy with the song, touched even, and the general impression was that Kurt would have wanted the song played in his memory.

I could totally see that. If Weird Al spoofs you, you know you've made it. If Weird Al ever made a song about me, I'd be totally honored, and I'd want it played in my memory, too.
