Constantinople.

Istanbul was Constantinople. Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople.

Captain Haddock's obviously fake beard is supremely endearing.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-27

Oh excellent, thank you! I had no idea this film existed!

One problem I have, though: if the Golden Fleece is a Turkish ship, how come the name on it is written in French?

EvilHomer - 2014-05-27

Also, what's up with the counter-clockwise stairs in the fortress tower? It looks like an old fortification (anyone know which?), so shouldn't the rotation go the other way round?

To think we used to have the technology to do movies without crappy CGI.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-05-27

Right, these days his Doggie would be talking, Snowy is the name of his Dog? I'm not as familiar with this, but I've read some Tintin comics in the past.

Snowy is his English name, his French name is Milou.

I was wondering what you'd think of Snowy! Tintin was one of my favorite series as a kid, and between second and third grade I read every comic I could get my hands on. Snowy was an awesome dog; very intelligent, very loyal, like Lassie with a sense of humor. He never spoke, but he could communicate after a fashion with Tintin, and he was occasionally given thought bubbles, which allowed him to "speak" directly to the reader.

They did make a CGI Tintin movie; I haven't seen it yet, but I don't believe Snowy spoke. At any rate, this is an excellent adaption; the casting is spot-on, and even Haddock's awful fake beard works just fine - it helps to emphasize the Capatin's cartoonish character.

I was never super into Tintin (my older brother had them all and would give away the endings when I borrowed them so I never finished them and by the time I could read them I was kind of into NIMH and things.) The CGI one just didn't look right and wondered why they didn't just do a cel animation like Persepolis or Secret of Kells. I'm really not one of those purists (would the new Godzilla still look cool if it was a guy in a costume? Probably not) but sometimes it's best to stick to what you know.

I had forgotten about it but found this when I was rewatching the Spielberg trailer:

Looks perfect except for less-than-perfect animation which could've easily been achieved in 2011.

They've done traditionally animated Tintin movies before, too. Also, two TV series and at least one claymation film.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-05-28

That's great Homer, I'm glad that you know so much about Tintin. I wasn't into comics as much, and at that age I was a firm TV watcher, saturday morning cartoons and shows like Archies and Banana Splits.

I love Hot Dog from the late 1960s animated Archies, he's as solid of a character as any of the kids in the show, he's also a keeper of knowledge to save the day at times, a lover and a cynic.

I went to torrent and got the new Tintin movie, and I'll finish this old one and check out the new and see what the connections are, if Snowy talks and how the Dogs compare. I like how enduring the story is, many of the stories I like with Dog characters aren't doing much right now.

love the Inspectors in this, nailed it!

infinite zest - 2014-05-27

Is it just me or does Tintin look like the lovechild of Ed Grimley and Pee Wee?

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-05-30

If you get a chance, read the books. They're delightful! Racist at points, but delightful!
