From September 2010.

Also, this isn't what I expected when I read the word "TaintDroid."

Missed that, I too was blinded by the name.

why the fuck do applications even have non-authorized access to this data in the first place?

not to mention the craziness of an OS which allows random "sandboxed" apps to spy on other "sandboxed" apps to determine what private data is leaking out into said sandboxes...

I think the privacy aspect wouldn't piss off consumers half as much as if you tabulated how much of this kind of thing eats up their data plans.

The Android apple has fallen far far from the UNIX tree (actually this applies to apple stuff too, ha!)

It's not a fault of the OS. It's the user's willingness to have some stupid app they think is cute and click "OKAY" every time the little box pops up.

It's partially the fault of the OS, for making this information easily-available and for hiding the permission to do so in an incomprehensible list at download/install time, with permission categories which are incredibly broad and it's pretty much impossible for any app to work without the categories that enable this particular data leak.

I definitely prefer the Apple approach - apps have no extra permissions at install time, and when an app wants to do something that requires permission, you can approve/deny it *at that time*, and later change your decision as well (with all such decisions kept in one easy-to-manage spot).
