This is going to make Yahtzee have to do a 2-parter.

The train that politely stops for trucks @2:38 is something I can't believe they didn't catch in QA.

Is this thing getting a PC port? I don't plan on buying it, but maybe modders can turn it into something fun.

Potrod - 2014-05-28

This is the PC version, according to the description.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-05-28

Jeeze. I was hoping this was a PS4 exclusive or something. Oh, well.

Potrod - 2014-05-28

The first trailer I saw for this game made it look incredible.

infinite zest - 2014-05-28

I was really excited, like "I'm going to invest in a next-gen system just for this" excited. The story seemed cool, and the gameplay looked like it could hold my attention longer than a game like GTA3, where halfway through the mission "nah.. gonna run over as many people as I can.." Been there done that. :(

infinite zest - 2014-05-28

Every generation needs its Shenmue I guess. Also, I don't know if any of you have BEEN to Chicago, but boxes and fences do melt just like that. Also, the L makes plenty of stops, maybe he just got lucky. Goddamnit this is disappointing.

infinite zest - 2014-05-28

or else they took what every mob guy ever says down at the loading docks a little too seriously: "I'll make him disappear boss, make him fall right out of the world"

Maru - 2014-06-03

Shenmue? Shenmue was a finished game. There was nothing like this in Shenmue.

theSnake - 2014-05-28

This is the fastest selling UbiSoft game released. Please stop buying UbiSoft games, you're basically paying for the CGi trailers for their next ripoff at this point.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-05-28

What if they made this a prequel for the next Assassin's Creed game? Eh? EHHHH?

deadpan - 2014-05-29

I'm ok with morons buying these mediocre titles if it indirectly subsidizes those really fun Rayman games Ubisoft's been putting out lately.

The Mothership - 2014-05-28

When he land the bike in the back of the truck, oh man.

SolRo - 2014-05-28

I dunno, back in my day (as long as they weren't game breaking) bugs like this were considered a fun thing.

there's a tradeoff in how much can be tested in the "massive open world" games people demand while an on-rails game is comparatively simple to get polished and bug-free.

also some really nit-picky shit in here...Ooo, no bullet splashes in water! there goes my immersion!

(or is this the same bitching and moaning every time a new "generation" of games comes out and e-autists come out in force to find every instance of something not a perfect copy of reality)

(full disclosure; I don't own the game or give two shits about it)

Gmork - 2014-05-28

Not having water splashes is kinda scrubby for a budget that huge.

That guy - 2014-05-29

You have to be kidding.

You don't try to half-assedly implement a bunch of shit you know you can't get right. It's like the game's still being programmed.

Stupid design and programming were fun back in the day when everything else about a given game was BRAND NEW. This is like someone made GTA zero in 2014.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-05-29

Even today, bugs can be fun(ny), as in Skyrim or other Bethesda games, but those are usually things like flying horses or the physics engine having a full-on meltdown.

This is just "we don't give a fuck" implementation.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-29

I doubt I'm the first one who saw the "PS2 ragdoll physics" annotation and thought that was a GOOD thing.

garcet71283 - 2014-05-29

If i had a dollar for every time i fell through the floor of the Balmora Mages Guild, i would have about 10 dollars.

Gmork - 2014-05-28

I already knew this was going to be shit.

Why? Because sleeping dogs was kinda shitty. It had some cool moments in the beginning but most of the game turns into saints row 3 kind of grinding for sway in the city or some such. Drearily boring repetetive quests that are all the same.

But it was really fun to fight people hand to hand. Too bad that stops being possible once you go far enough in the game and everyone just has guns.

Gmork - 2014-05-28

I liked the cutscenes though.

Adham Nu'man - 2014-05-29

Is Sleeping Dogs somehow related to this game?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-05-29

Hang on, I don't think we patched Gmork's dialog trees to mesh with the comment thread. Let me just start the Steam update...

Gmork - 2014-05-29

Uh yeah, it's kind of a direct sequel to sleeping dogs. By the same people.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-05-29

SPK, am I the only one who finds the line "Gmork replies to Gmork" in the Recent Activity sidebar perennially funny?

Adham Nu'man - 2014-05-29

No, Sleeping Dogs has nothing to do with Watch Dogs. They're not made by the same people, or the same team... They don't even share a publisher...

Sleeping Dogs was made with a tiny budget and was the little Hong Kong GTA that could (and is a pretty awesome little game).

Watch Dogs is a AAA spunkfest new IP from Ubisoft that was intended from day one to be a hyper-mega huge hit and to sell everyone on the idea that they'd have to upgrade to next gen to really get the most out of this thing. It failed miserably.

Gmork - 2014-05-30

Well holy balls, I'm completely wrong. They are both 'open world' and 'gta style'. Maybe that was part of the reason they tried to pimp the hell out of the advertising, like the "me too" versions of games that ensnare grandparents into buying the wrong thing.

fedex - 2014-05-29

yes, this is where I started laughing out loud

KillerGazebo - 2014-05-29

None of these adequately show the biggest fault in this game: the driving.

Its like trying to navigate a shopping cart at mach three over roads made of some kind of non-Newtonian fluid. In order to maintain any control whatsoever you have to switch to first-person mode which actually influences the programming to make turns less 'cinematic' and more immediate. First-person driving mode isn't an option on console, so you're out of luck if you didn't pick this up for PC. Accelerating while turning is basically like not turning at all, and trying to do anything fancy like navigating through alleys or slipping between cars is next to impossible.

This would be forgivable in another game where driving played a much smaller role, but you're supposed to be "the best driver in the city" with dozens of missions based entirely around car chases, when going a block without smashing into something is an achievement.

And that's not even to mention the mandatory use of U-Play which serves as some kind of completely inept middle man who intercepts all your connections to the Ubisoft servers and loses them on the way to Steam. I'm yet to be able to connect to the servers for online play, but I have spent probably half an hour of my life watching U-Play try to connect to them in vain before it will let me play my game.

In essence this is a multiplayer-focused open world driving game in which you can't play online or drive.

Gmork - 2014-05-29

Ubisoft has been ruining my Trials Fusion experience.

Ubisoft is a terrible company and uplay is worse than origin and satan combined.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-05-29

Games really shouldn't ever call you the "best" at anything skill-related unless you've done something to earn it. Otherwise it's kind of an ironic thing, most times.

"He's the best driver in the city. He only wrecked sixteen cars to get here."

pastorofmuppets - 2014-05-29

Who is the market for this? People who read the Assassin's Creed books?

Koda Maja - 2014-05-29

Best PS2 game ever.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-29

I was all set to play this ironically until he mentioned the mandatory mouse acceleration. What the serious fuck?

Can anyone who works or knows people in the programming industry explain why it is that game developers seem to love saddling PC gamers with ever more egregious mouse acceleration? I know it's usually a symptom of a game that's been hastily ported from consoles, but surely, with mouse acceleration being one of the loudest and most consistent complaint across the board, making sure the mouse controls can be fine-tuned should be considered a top priority by every last porting team, right?

jreid - 2014-05-29

I don't see anything wrong here. It's a video game, not a fucking simulation of the universe. Of course it's goofy.

spikestoyiu - 2014-05-29

But the undersides of cars!!!!! THEY'RE JUST BLACK!!! It's fucking disgusting!!!

Definitely did laugh at the pedestrian being pushed with the SUV.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-05-29

That's a bit of a stretch. Their goal is to make a realistic-looking place to enjoy a game in. You might as well say there should be Goombas to step on or flowers to let you shoot fire, 'cause it's a video game, and all video games have that.

StanleyPain - 2014-05-29

I think you people are missing the point. It's not that the underside of a car being black effects the game, but rather that this is a title that cost nearly 0 million to develop and market (and pay off reviewers) and features something like 5 different 0+ special editions, yet it clearly went through less development than the latest version of Club Penguin.

spikestoyiu - 2014-05-29

It's also an Ubisoft game, so I didn't need to read the reviews to know it was likely a mess. But now that I have read a few, it seems like there are plenty of valid criticisms. This video does not contain many of them.

jreid - 2014-06-04

I didn't realize it's another Ubisoft turd. I've watched a few other review/critical vids about this game and I realize they wholeheartedly deserve all hate slung in their direction.

Hooker - 2014-05-29

Glad we're tired of invisible walls, finally. I think I gave up on playing NEW BEST EVER GAMES when Ninja Gaiden came out at the end of the PS2/Xbox lifecycle, and it was basically a fucking rail shooter for how little you could go off the beaten path, except at least rail shooters don't pretend to be more than they are.

Fuck "triple-A" games. How did that term even get invented for this shit?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-05-29

Pretty much the same diff between mainstream and indie films. One wastes far more money than the other, mostly.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-05-29

The spiritual successor to Skate 3?

Riskbreaker - 2014-05-29

yawn, this "game" looks about as fun as 99% of what's out in the market today. I'll stick to Mario Kart 8

craptacular - 2014-05-29

Yeah, just more of the same. Thankfully TF2 is as fun as ever!

Nominal - 2014-05-30

Oh god, they modeled the train tracks with 90 degree turns!

90 DEGREE TURNS!!! That you watch the trains take at full speed!
