A Song of Ice and Fire is quite possibly the best series of novels in recent memory, and I heartily recommend it to all of you.

What's your perception: does the series live up to the novels?

Bloody flux is a fun thing for him to throw in actually. I always wondered why in a lot of fantasy books, taking place in really squalid settings, everyone wasn't just shitting their brains out constantly.

And Adham opened it up for the neckbeards to take over now.
In my humble opinion, the show is fine. Some of the casting is very good (like Dinklage) while some is very poor. They change some things unnecessarily. But if doggy style sex, tits, beheadings, and betrayal is your thing, you'll probably enjoy it pretty well.

Well with Daenarys, she basically gets stranded in the wilderness, eats some berries she thinks might be edible, and winds up shitting her brains out and going on a major psychedelic experience.

Everyone back in Astapor and Meereen is getting the bloody flux.

While also shitting their brains out.

Finally a realistic fantasy novel. Hooray!

To be fair, it is quite hard to describe diarrhea/dysentery/whatever in a dramatic way that doesn't just devolve into "She sprays brown water out her ass for the next 6 hours, then dies."

the series totally lives up to the novels. It's a really really rare thing. Also, if you hate this show, look up the hobbit 2 dwarf getups and then look at the embroidery work that's done on GoT

I started watching the series this week.

As someone with a strong aversion to the Fantasy genre, I must admit I am very positively impressed.

First of all it's character drive, which already differentiates it from LOTR and similar stuff.

A lot of the characters start out as standard Fantasy genre cliches, but the series actually ends up putting them in expected situations that give an interesting spin on them. The acting ranges from brilliant to ridiculously bad, so at times it's very enjoyable but there are other parts that you kind of have to put up with.

The author is quite cruel to it's characters. I admire that. It's not super easy to put a lot of effort in creating an interesting, likeable character and then have really bad things happen to that character.

Well, he has an intellectual property he wishes to protect, and if he sees allowing fan fiction to proliferate as potential threat down the road, I understand his position.

That's legally/financially speaking, cause morally/ethically: it's a whole other story.

I found myself loving game of thrones despite generally not liking fantasy settings, but one of the reasons why I hate fantasy so much is that it's an endless circle jerk of authors ripping off and riffing on Tolkien's work ad nauseam, and while GRRM's world is definitely interesting, it still is based on a lot of the standard cliches that have defined the genre for decades.

If your world was shaped by Dragons and you have an ancient evil returning to herald a new age of darkness are you really in the best position to complain about fan fiction just because you came up with some original bullshit names like Westeros instead of Middle Earth?

I like his work and I understand his work effort was greater than the average basement geek writing a short story of how Daenerys fucks a Werebear or whatever, but still, it's not like you came up with the insane world of Dune.

I'm sorry but... Dune? What? The planet Dune itself is rather simple, despite its majesty, its the rest of interstellar space that Herbert expanded upon, like the Landsraad and all the other houses, and the boring worlds that have nothing to do with dune. It's more of a socio-political thriller/intrigue series than an actual blood and guts story. It's far less character-driven and more high-concept. The characters all felt like predictable robots in dune, in GoT at least you usually didn't have any idea how the next person was going to die or the next major wrinkle in the story would appear. Dune has that "every main character is proficient at everything" theme going on that makes authors like clive cussler so fucking boring and stupid. Dune just had a really neat backstory for his interstellar Dirk Diggler Without All The Action.

Actually, I wanted to hate it but decided to give it a try based on a couple of Tyrion clips that people posted here. I'm enjoying it.

I started watching Breaking Bad thanks to poetv when someone posted the bathtub acid clip. Back then Breaking Bad wasn't remotely as popular as it came to be but that clip made me go out and buy the first and second season on DvD and I loved it.

Adham - I was the same way with My Little Pony. I wanted to hate it, but people kept posting stuff here on poeTV, and that got me curious. I never would have watched the show if it weren't for this place.

The fucking ponies aren't for everyone, but don't rule out the SFW stuff.
