Remember this commercial, :26 has always stayed with me.

Should find the one set to "Maniac".

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-02

The mid to late 90s was when mainstream advertisers discovered irony. It was an ugly, ugly time.

infinite zest - 2014-06-02

Now I know where homer's Nacho Hat song came from: I always thought it was kind of a weird non sequitur.

infinite zest - 2014-06-02

I can't remember when the irony thing all started.. maybe the Geico Gecko? That's not really irony though... just like "why am I a gecko selling car insurance? I can't drive a car" This isn't my definition of irony either.. he wants to be a nacho man and that's exactly what he became, even if he's alone against the universe which is nothing but infinite white nothingness and a table.

badideasinaction - 2014-06-02

That's more self-awareness than irony IZ - I think that sort of thing cycles when the levels of ridiculous get to be so over-the-top that the writers say "fuck it" and have the actors point out how ridiculous it all is. Kinda like how ads oscillate between holding up bullshit beauty standards and then being all concerned about unrealistic beauty standards; as long as you switch it up every few years the public (or at least the 18-24 demographic who hasn't seen it before) thinks it's entirely new and revolutionary.

animegurl1000 - 2014-06-02

To be fair, "Nacho Man" is such an easy parody that I'm surprised Mad Magazine didn't use it first.

animegurl1000 - 2014-06-02

(that was a reply to IZ's first comment)

infinite zest - 2014-06-02

yeah I was saying that it's not really irony.. by its definition I can think of very few commercials that would put you in a position to buy the product and then convince you not to in a self-aware manor. Like it'd be ironic if there was a tainted meat found at a fast food restaurant and you're watching the news story about it and it cuts to a commercial for the same fast food restaurant..

The Walking Dead KFC commercial.

The Mothership - 2014-06-02

So which one of you fine gentlemen or ladies can explain why he is fencing an imaginary opponent with a place of nachos at the end?

The Mothership - 2014-06-02

plate.

infinite zest - 2014-06-03

He's fencing the very idea of hunger. I didn't know about the KFC thing.. That's too fucking perfect.

infinite zest - 2014-06-03

But tie ins or badly placed ads are one thing.. I'm racking my brain trying to think a commercial that uses irony.. I guess the Trix rabbit, who likes Trix more than anyone.. He's a lovable mascot but we don't want for him to get those Trix.

joelkazoo - 2014-06-04

But that doesn't work either. Most kids (myself included) watching those commercials think the kids in said commercials are dicks, and if we ever met the Rabbit, we'd be more than happy to give him Trix.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-04

They had a vote on the issue. You could mail in a ballot, to either give the Rabbit his first taste of Trix, or cockblock him yet again. I chose to let the Rabbit have some Trix. A couple months later, they sent me a form letter, ostensibly from the Rabbit, thanking me and saying the longstanding ban had been lifted, and he'd finally been allowed to eat Trix. It was all lies. None of the subsequent commercials acknowledged the vote on his landmark civil rights case.

You must of missed this:

I think real irony is if you fed real Trix to a real rabbit, it would die.

il fiore bel - 2014-06-02

That's a lot of farts waiting to happen.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-02

Wait, was this a real thing? I thought Homer made it up!
