We (Canada and the US, both) need specialized mental health professionals on call to deal with these sorts of situations. All of the witnesses seem like kind, receptive people who would be happy to see this poor man talked down and taken care of.

Until then, fuck these pigs in their dirty pig snouts.

ashtar. - 2014-06-01

We just need cops who are trained and accountable. As long as you can beat a man to death on film and get administrative leave, this will keep happening.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-01

You don't think that re-establishing some sort of mental-health safety net, and maybe training/employing more paramedics who are trained to deal with the mentally ill would have an impact as well? I don't think that it's unreasonable to have another front-line profession involved in these sorts of situations.I know you're not implying that mentally ill people are, by default, criminals. Most sane people wouldn't say that, so why do we expect law enforcement to be the go-to-guys for mental health crises?

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-01

Not arguing with the training and accountability point. Or even trying to argue at all, really.

oddeye - 2014-06-02

My question is: Why WOULDN'T you want to get 2 weeks paid vacation for achieving the best orgasm all month?

Azmo23 - 2014-06-02

Like a non-violent mental health swat team? I like that idea. Please contact my local congressman and change the world.

ashtar. - 2014-06-02

Those are excellent ideas, BorrowedSolution. I just meant that the police are in many cases going to have to deal with mentally ill people. If they were properly trained to deal with mentally ill people and held accountable for their actions, this might not be such a big problem.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-02

Sorry Azmo, I'm just the ideas guy. Now your SWAT parallel has me envisioning squads with Thorazine and Atavan in tranquilizer darts, roaming the cities and bagging them some kooks.

Not sure how I feel about that. Besides kind of amused at the mental image, of course.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR MOTHER

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-02

...It would make a great comedy skit.

pyslexic dharmacist - 2014-06-08

While tranquilizer darts for humans are an excellent idea, it'll be a long time before technology gets to that point. Drugs used on animals carry a very high risk of death, and safer ones (like Ativan) take a bare minimum of 10 minutes to start working, even when injected.

And, of course, just like those who think autism is worse than mumps, there are a lot of voters out there who think forcibly medicating someone is worse than beating them to death.

memedumpster - 2014-06-01

At least there are no cops in Heaven.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2014-06-01

Except for 90% of Peter Weller.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Tacoma Washington

TheSupafly - 2014-06-02

Tacoma has the highest black population in the state, and these officers still chose a white man to do this to, what a bizarro world washington state is.

Cena_mark - 2014-06-02

I was quite surprised to watch a video about police brutality and to see the victim was white.

oddeye - 2014-06-02

He wasn't after they beat him black...and blue, red and purple.

kennydra - 2014-06-02

My hometown!

infinite zest - 2014-06-01

This looks kind of like the place I just moved out of. One of our neighbors was schizophrenic and at any point in the night would go out screaming things in the middle of our parking lot like my upstairs neighbor was drilling holes in the ceiling so he could watch her sleep, digging through the trash because Barak Obama stole her uterus, things like that. Granted it's Portland and not Tacoma, but Portland's got its share of police brutality on its hands too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Chasse

Even after she lunged at an officer, nothing was done except for SOP. Four tazers?

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-01

Your comment construction was confusing, zest. That wasn't the best place for the wikipedia link.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-06-02

There needs to be more pressure from society at large to stop this. Cops will act like this as long as we let them get away with it. They know how to select victims we won't get too upset about.

Trouble is, whenever we try to hold them accountable for shit like this, they threaten us with the usual bogeymen. If we don't let cops "do their jobs" we'll all die at the hands of muggers, rapists and home invaders, so they say. Our fear usually wins out.

It's time we realize the world isn't as horrible as the cops want us to think. We don't need to strike a deal with devils to keep us safe.

oddeye - 2014-06-02

Ever since they beat that guy to death I bet there have been no reported child crucifixions in a 2 mile radius.

Coincidence?

oddeye - 2014-06-02

Guy's, let's not judge. He resisted and the cause of his death is currently unknown. We don't know if there were any blows to the rest of his body.

Cut these cops some slack guys or else they wont be around to serve and protect you.

animegurl1000 - 2014-06-02

My favorite police brutality apologists are the ones who consider themselves libertarian or at the very least anti-government.

Gmork - 2014-06-02

get cancer and fucking die, oddeye

exy - 2014-06-02

Because THAT looked like an unironic comment.

exy - 2014-06-02

Oh wait I just stepped into an ironic echoing of another old comment didn't I

EvilHomer - 2014-06-02

Mr Eye, I am not sure whether you were being ironic, being a troll, playing the Devil's Advocate, or expressing your true and honest opinion, but five stars for providing the counterpoint we all sorely need.

P.S. get cancer and survive, because it's mean to wish death upon someone, but do lose all your hair, and then have everyone make fun of you for losing all hair, because they do not know you recently survived cancer, and also they are jerks.

oddeye - 2014-06-02

To avoid confusion I propose that we now place a lower case "i" in brackets at the end of any ironic statements. (i)

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-06-02

That's no good, Oddeye. What you need is an entire markup language. That way we can make entirely unambiguous statements about everything! < sarcastic > wouldn't that be great? < /sarcastic >.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-02

8===o~~~~~ Is the universally recognized sarcasm symbol.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-02

With sarcasm: how about elcor rules?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-06-02

Good fucking Lord.

Obvious mental episode that is not violent. Let's kill him.

Holy fuck.

Enjoy - 2014-06-02

Police unions are a huge part of the problem

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-06-02

They should have used a butterfly net, like in cartoons.

animegurl1000 - 2014-06-02

You mean beat him with a butterfly net instead?

oddeye - 2014-06-02

why you got to bring butterflies into this? Haven't they suffered enough?

Gmork - 2014-06-02

5 for evil

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-02

I know, right? How dare they outsource this act of murder to the lowly Taser. This is clearly a job for a gun.

oddeye - 2014-06-02

These fucking cops beating a man to death in plain sight. At least haul him off into the back of a van and claim he bumped his head 500 times when you slammed the brakes to let a disabled child cross the road.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-06-02

What a horrifying sound.

That guy - 2014-06-04

Side note- but they might have used a different clip than the 15 year old black kid who was trying to act like it was cool to see that happen.....
Do that kid's future self a favor and just get a quote from someone else. Sheesh.
