I have no idea who any of these people are, but good for you, Pat Patterson.

joelkazoo - 2014-06-16

From left to right: "Mean" Gene Okerlund, Pat Patterson, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart, Hillbilly Jim, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Howard Finkel, and Tony Atlas.

Aelric - 2014-06-16

Roddy is about the only one that doesn't look like he absorbed a nuclear blast to the face.

I don't give a shit about wrestling, but I'm always happy to see a guy come out and have it accepted by the folks around him.

The old guys, they were in the closet for a lot of practical reasons and many of them are still terrified of what might happen if they come out. Hell, I've known a guy that lives in San Francisco, 50 years old, has a live in boyfriend who he co-owns a house with still deny it on all levels, even though his boyfriend doesn't. The psychological fear of it runs deep and being able to be out is still super new and super scary. It's easy to forget that as younger folks whom have been raised or at least spent some formative years in a post-out society.

So year, good for him. It might seem like a matter of course these days, but those old guys still need a ton of courage to come out.

Cena_mark - 2014-06-16

Patterson never came out officially until now, but his sexuality is one of wrestling's worst kept secrets. I'm not sure if his fellow wrestlers are genuinely surprised to hear him come out, or if this is just a publicity stunt. Either way good for him. He's been the subject of nasty rumors, including one where they say he molested a young Piper.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-16

>>Roddy is about the only one that doesn't look like he absorbed a nuclear blast to the face.

Roddy's probably played that pipe a few times himself.

oddeye - 2014-06-17

It may have been a worst kept secret kind of deal but it's still a big thing to put it out on the table, right there in front of the entire world.

So hat's off to this fella, it must have been a huge burden to carry all those years and I hope it inspires anyone else of any age or gender to express their sexual identities.

Ok!

Hooker - 2014-06-17

You have to go in the closet to come out of it. This was a heavily orchestrated thing to happen on a reality show. EVERY person at that table knew Patterson was gay for decades. This stupid thing deserves the utmost cynicism.

It's actually a much better story that in the age of it's-so-difficult-for-pro-athletes-to-be-gay, when they have less contact with one another than you do using a public toilet after a gay person, an industry where men wear panties and boot and roll around on top of each other was perfectly accepting of a gay man back in the 70s. But, whatever. Here we go with another round of the increasingly tiresome some-guy-finally-announces-he's-gay story.

Aelric - 2014-06-17

Hooker, what is the point of being angry? I mean, what do you actually get out of it?

Hooker - 2014-06-17

Well, when you see, hear, encounter, or in some other way experience something that is outside of the limits of your comfort, taste, ethics, or other inclinations of that nature, anger is an effective and natural way of dealing with your frustrations. In this particular example, I was also able to use my anger as a vehicle for giving people a deeper understanding of the various agents at work behind this specific incident.

So, I'd say I won that bargain.

Hooker - 2014-06-17

More to the point, Pat Patterson was OPENLY GAY in PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING since the late 50s, when started with a gender-bender gimmick. The gay-and-out-and-in-your-face real life Pat Patterson is a hero of far greater proportions than the old man in his mid-70s that finally built up the nerve.

mon666ster - 2014-06-16

I had no idea Patterson was in the closet until this clip came up. I thought he had been out in years. What wrestling fan doesn't know that Patterson is gay? I almost get the feeling this was a publicity stunt to drum up media attention for the network.

Hooker - 2014-06-17

Yes and no. It was a publicity stunt, but this show was filmed ages ago. This was designed as the big blowoff to entice a TV network to pick it up (they all passed).

Adjuvant - 2014-06-16

Did anyone else here glance at the title and read "Pat Robertson Comes Out of the Closet?"

No?

Just me?

takewithfood - 2014-06-16

It wasn't just you.

spicediver - 2014-06-16

What he said

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-16

Waiwait, there are straight pro wrestlers?

oddeye - 2014-06-17

The only straight pro wrestler is, ironically, Hard Gay.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-06-17

Has Hard Gay done anything to address the persistent industry rumours that he is gay?

oddeye - 2014-06-17

Dressing up as a woman doesn't make you gay, dude.

mon666ster - 2014-06-17

Amen to that!

crasspm - 2014-06-16

Noice.
