I loved this game because it hated me.

Could've done without that bit after the credits, though.

These games have always seemed so goddamn weird from the outside looking in. For those that have played them, what the hell?

Japan

I played 1 and 2 and liked them, not loved. 1 made a pretty decent impression on me particularly the last few levels. good classic dark fantasy shit in there.

dunno shit about this game.

The gameplay in the first Drakengard is awful. So is the story, but that's sort of the point: it turns fantasy stereotypes into the worst possible people with the worst possible things happening to them.

Drakengard 2 isn't bad at all. It makes good on the first game's attempts to combine Dynasty Warriors brawling with Panzer Dragoon dragonback shooting. The storyline is a more generic dose of kid-hero goofery, though it does get dark at times.

Drakengard 3 goes back to the original in its ideas, and it does a better job with them. The characters are all horrible and broken, yet wierdly sympathetic. The gameplay is a serviceable Devil May Cry with some terrible slowdown when the toddler-minded dragon jumps into things. The storyline starts off with the heroine trying to kill all of her sisters, who rule a lost epoch of medieval Europe, and it only gets nuttier from there.

If you try only one of this team's creations, though, it should be Nier. It's an action game with side attractions that explore other genres (shooters, text adventures, fishing), and the characters are all endearing oddballs in the midst of some fucked-up events. It's also a tangent to the Drakengard series, so you don't have to know a lick about the other games.

Why does the dragon's voice sound like a six-year-old girl?

Why does the lady have a flower growing out of her eye?

Why haven't I heard of these games before?

Why do I want to play this even though I know it'll completely fuck my wrists up?

(Although the wiki summary makes it sound like this is the only rhythm section in the whole game?)

BlisteredButtress - 2014-06-22

Yup. Only section in the whole game. No warning. No tutorial, not even a popup. Just a few confused seconds and then failure.

infinite zest - 2014-06-23

eek.. so.. by "start over" do you mean start over at the beginning of the song? Or the whole game? :(

longwinded - 2014-06-23

Gmork - 2014-06-23
