Interesting story, but, ugh young turks.

Azmo23 - 2014-06-22

yeah, I couldn't find the local news coverage for this event

infinite zest - 2014-06-22

Horrible reporting, but interesting story. This could've happened to me. I was living in this apartment complex which was basically a whole bunch of doors with numbers over to the side. I got a knock saying "police" and there were like 5 officers at my door asking if I knew where 2xxx was, much like a lost pizza delivery driver.

Turns out they were looking for the upstairs neighbor, one of the few people I didn't know, but I wonder what would've happened if I didn't come to the door. The person they arrested was selling heroin, but I don't know if they noticed my scale, and the whole place was pretty hotboxed.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-22

I wish some cops would shoot the Young Turks.

fedex - 2014-06-22

why do you think there are no Old Turks?

takewithfood - 2014-06-22

Young Turks.

takewithfood - 2014-06-22

At least there's no Cenk, though.

Gmork - 2014-06-22

Well that turned my morning into a bunch of frothing anger.

memedumpster - 2014-06-22

At least the Taliban gives you the opportunity to convert first.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-22

THE ONLY WAY TO STOP A BAD GUY WITH A GUN IS WITH A GOOD GUY WITH A GUN.

IF YOU NEED TO STOP A GOOD GUY WITH A GUN, YOU'RE FUCKED.

Honestly, I am okay with this, I don't have a problem if the officers were cleared of criminal charges. I have to believe that shooting an innocent woman was not something that the cops intended to do. If the men did as they were trained to do, the department is responsible for the outcome, and they should be the ones to pay. And they're paying in a way that will actually do the woman some good.

I have to believe that this is a criminal investigation they're talking about, and there will be further inquiry of the matter of not shooting innocent citizens in their homes.

infinite zest - 2014-06-22

I don't think if I'd take any monetary amount to get shot again.

oddeye - 2014-06-22

Worst game of hide and seek ever.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-22

That's easy to say when it's only a woman that got shot, Mr Holmes, but what if the cops had shot a _dog_?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-22

Let me turn that around Homer. If the cop had pinned the woman down with his knee on her chest, said "I'm going to gut this fucking bitch", and cut her throat, I think criminal charges would have been appropriate.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-22

So what you're saying is, as long as they gun down terrified citizens in a cold, calculated fashion, there's no problem.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-22

What I'm saying, Homer, is what i already said, in an earlier post, in English words. Since I don't know any other languages, it'll have to do.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-22

No wait. Let me put it this way. I think accidents like this are an inevitable consequence of an costly insane and failed drug policy, and the cop on the line who has to carry it out didn't make the decision. It's a war. They fight it like a war, and this is exactly the sort of thing that happens in war.

Gmork - 2014-06-22

The only reason we are hearing anything about it is because it was a fuckup. If this had gone the way they planned there'd be a dead druggie downstairs and nobody would have even known it had happened except the local police.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-22

Yeah, and when this sort of shit happens in a war, you get your ass UCMJ'd. People always want to protect their buddies; I get it, that's natural, that's understandable. But I am not a cop. I have no vested interest in seeing an officer guilty of shooting a black woman skirt justice and get off with a slap on the wrist. If you're a cop and you want to circle the wagons, fine. Say "it's an accident!", say "Policing is hard!" Meanwhile, the rest of us should be calling for your badge, because this was a criminal act and the police are not above the law; indeed, if anything, they should be held to even tighter standards of conduct.

Just out of curiosity, how did you react to the Rodney King beatings? Did you also think that was just a case of boys-will-be-boys?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-22

Yeah, and we're hearing about this because she won a judgement against the department. I think the fact that the department was held accountable, and not the individual cops, is a modest blow for justice. I think I've seen it before, a big city police force hangs its officers out to dry when systemic chickens come home to roost. That is one UGLY mixed metaphor!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-22

You don't think it was an accident, homer? Do you have any knowledge of this case? All I l\know is there's nothing to be gained by shooting an innocent person. I'm guessing it's not a big career builder. When I try to imagine how I'd feel if I shot an innocent woman, I'd want to go home and cry.

Here's something that I believe, but it could be wrong, since I got my law degree from Dick Wolf university. The city has a vested interest in prosecuting the cops, since convicted wrongdoing on the part of individual cops may take the city off the hook for liability. Does anybody have any INFORMED thought about that? By any standard of logic, if the cops aren't at fault, the system has to be at fault.

ashtar. - 2014-06-22

Hey, I went to Dick Wolf university too! Go Dick Wolves!

memedumpster - 2014-06-22

Here is the Cato Institute's botched police raid map.

http://www.cato.org/raidmap

If Russian soldiers had that impressive a kill count of innocent Americans, we'd nuke Moscow. This looks like an invasion map.

memedumpster - 2014-06-22

"All I l\know is there's nothing to be gained by shooting an innocent person."

There's the satisfaction that you have absolute power and can kill anyone you want whenever you want because you're a God amongst target garbage.

Of course, this doesn't apply to the psychology of humans, so of course you don't feel that way. The military robots like Atlas V or VI that will be able to actually think wont be like that either.

Until then, cops are gods and you will be worship or die.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-22

Well, everything I'm saying is conditional on there not being a cover-up, and that's more than we can know right now.The official story is the only story that someone didn't pull out his ass. Inhuman Psychopath policeman? As a narrative, it's possible, but it came out of memedumpster's ass.

When 4 police shot Amadou Diallo, in New York, they were tried for murder and acquitted There were black jurors who voted for that acquittal of those white police officers, because the overwhelming evidence was that they thought this guy had a gun, and they didn't have time for any other reaction,.and it could have been a gun, because the government had them fighting a war,

you really really WANT them to be psychopaths, because you want a better answer than "shit happens", but shit just happens. It's unfair, but it's also unfair to suspend the innocent until proven guilty rule for police.

oddeye - 2014-06-22

"Innocent" people don't hide in the closet when a gang of cops come to deliver justice. Could have been a murderous negro for all they knew. Would you take tgat chance? Think of the officer's children!!

Raggamuffin - 2014-06-22

I read a good book about police raids in America last year called "Rise of the Warrior Cop"
